Algebra is necessary if you want to get into a STEM career. Without being able to go into any STEM careers it will greatly reduce the amount of options you have to choose from, career wise. People make the argument that algebra is a common reason for high school failure and dropout rates which undoubtedly lead to unemployment. While this is true, there would also be a greater amount of unemployed peoples if they are uneducated in mathematics regarding algebra, considering the plethora of careers that demand it.

In 2012 an international study was conducted to measure a country’s ability to do certain math. America scored below average in comparison to thirty-four other countries tested. (PISA) Removing algebra from the core curriculum will only make us more incompetent as a society and score lower on tests such as these. Finally a debate.org page was created on this exact topic, 47% percent of the participants believed algebra should be a requirement to graduate high school education. 53% disagreed and said it shouldn’t be necessary. This two sides are surprisingly close which brings me into my next point.
