The use of steroids in sports Everyone watches sports. Even the Romans used sports to see who the best was. The only difference then it was more one on one. Sports today are more on what team is better rather than what player is better. The use of steroids has forever changed the face of professional sports, making it a world fueled by drug contacts instead of skill and talent.
Steroids have been a very common form of drugs used in sports today despite the fact that athletes are regularly tested for doping and are immediately expelled from events if they test positive. Why would athletes use steroids when such tactics simply kill the whole spirit of competition? To compete means to show people who is more skillful and better trained for a certain sport, however with steroids this purpose of competition is destroyed because the winner has won not due to his own ability but because of certain performance enhancing drugs. drug scandal creeping into the thought as well. It’s not just baseball that is tainted with scandal; it is every sport from football to gymnastics. When people think of sports what comes to their minds?
The different sporting events, the many unique players that make up their sport or the drug scandals spread throughout. Maybe it’s a little bit of each. A good example is Barry Bonds. He used steroids near the end of his career and had numerous home runs. Now the record that he holds has an asterisk next to the number of home runs that was hit by Berry. Because of the steroid use, he was able to hit all of them. To level the playing field for those players that chose to not to use performance-enhancing drugs why don’t the owners or managers of the team drug test everyone before their game or events that they are in. It is bad enough that sports players have more perks than the normal civilian, if this author who played sports in school would have used steroids to help his game he would have been kicked off the
team.
So why isn’t the same true for professional sports players? Maybe the owners of the teams don’t want to lose their star players so they cover it up somewhat, but why not drug test each and every one of the players so that there aren’t any “favorites” that way when someone comes up positive they can be reprimanded in the proper, professional manner. There are many different types of performance-enhancing drugs that players can use to help them in their sport. One type is Anabolic Steroids. This type of drug increases muscle strength by encouraging new muscle growth. They also allow the person using them to train harder and longer for any given period. Yet this drug has damaging side effects, liver damage, sterility in men and infertility in women, and it can also lead to death. The sporting world is always evolving. During the past decade, it has evolved for the worse. With every athlete looking for the edge over their opponent, steroids have become an everyday “medicine.” Since so many players are currently using steroids, the games have become more exciting to the fans. In baseball, there has been a huge increase of homeruns per season because of steroids. The problem now, is if we were to completely take steroids away from the sport, the game would become boring. There would be less homeruns and therefore making it a low-scoring game. Steroids have become part of the sport’s success? It is a thought that remains in the back of our minds. When watching any game today and someone hits a home run or scores a touchdown, one must ask themselves, was that skill, or was that the steroids?
