To first understand why baseball players take steroids it must be known what steroids do once ingested. Anabolic steroids are a drug that helps release more testosterone and protein into the body (Horwitz). Therefore …show more content…
Athletes will generally take the steroid before a workout but it can vary. Athletes will take the steroid by either consuming it through the mouth or injecting it into their arm or any where they can find a vein (Anabolic). When people take steroids for the sake of getting stronger they will usually take 10 to 100 times more of it than if a type of steroid was prescribed for a medical condition (Anabolic). Once the athlete takes the steroids the supplement will travel to the tissue. The anabolic steroid is let in through a muscle dock. It will combine with the cell’s DNA and cause protein synthesis (Peterson). When athletes lift weights the action of the workout will make tears in the muscle. So while the athlete recovers from lifting the weights his body will repair those tears while gaining more mass. The human body does this by creating larger cells that pile up on the other cells which help us become …show more content…

This of course helps the player hit more homeruns and throw the ball farther. “Someone who is on steroids will experience increased performance in all athletic pursuits and will appear more physically imposing” (“Lemouse”). Every day people think that steroids just give the athlete more strength but in actuality they do more than just that. Like mentioned in the previous paragraph steroids do more to help the athlete like gain endurance to do the workout and they also help with tissue repair and recovery (Lemouse). Players Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Roger Clemens used steroids more for the healing factor rather than the physical gains. Mainly athletes will use steroids to become stronger and bigger to become better players though. The gains that an athlete gets from steroids are usually seen around 6 to 12 weeks, yet they can still see changes around the 3 week mark (Linnaeus). Another possible benefit to steroids is that for the athletes that use them steroids can be easy to obtain. There have been stories of baseball players going to foreign countries to play in the offseason. They were not on the hunt for steroids but they came across them because those are what the foreigners used on a daily basis. For the athletes who do take steroids this can be a positive to them.
