sport. Over time there have been many ways that have been used to gain advantages in sports such as performance enhancing drugs, amphetamines, pain killers, and doctoring baseballs and bats. The most predominant of these topics would be the use of performance enhancing drugs and it is to be said to be worse than any cheating in baseball. The question will arise throughout time of which is worse, performance enhancing drugs or doctoring equipment? The answer to this would be putting something in your body to make you a better player day in and day out would be much worse than throwing a little pine tar on a ball or putting cork in a bat.
A performance enhancing drug is well known as any substance or drug that someone (predominately athletes) uses to improve performance, recovery time and stamina. These drugs all have their positives and negatives. When taking these drugs these athletes focus on getting bigger faster and stronger and they do not focus on the long term side effects. Some of these effects can be detrimental on and off the field for teams of players using steroids. These steroids can cause a well-known of term “roid rage” which is over aggression from taking these drugs. They also can cause liver diseases and damage to male and female reproductive parts. The positives of the drugs that these baseball players love are being able to hit the ball further, run faster, be bigger and have more stamina throughout the game. Although these drugs are making this wonderful game fun to watch, it is effecting the game in a very negative way and in a worse way that doctoring equipment could ever effect the game. Steroids will always be a part of the game and something that we will never know how many players use these destructive drugs. The most common performance enhancing drug would be steroids which are more common in baseball than people would think.
Not only are steroids illegal but they are bad for the body and the game of baseball as well. There are many things wrong with taking steroids from a lot of different perspectives including a moral perspective, integrity standpoint, and cheating standpoint. Morally they are wrong because they are so bad for your body and against the law. Steroids have also been hurting the integrity of the game for many years. Players are having to put this harmful drug in their body to compete with the younger players and potentially break records to get them on the board. They think that they have to be bigger and faster and stronger to keep up with the game as they get older. Lastly from a cheating standpoint: these players are not only doing something illegal but it is considered cheating in the game. steroids are one of over 200 drugs that are banned in the MLB yet there are a tremendous amount of players taking these drugs, some which we may know of and some we have no idea that are taking …show more content…
them. Steroids have been a huge topic in baseball since the late 90’s because of how it was destroying the sport in “steroid era”. It has been giving these players an unfair advantage over everyone else in the league and it has had a major impact on the game. Over time players have been getting bigger, stronger and faster, but there is an explanation for this…steroids. These drugs give the players the capabilities of working out longer and more often without suffering the recovery problems that most players do (give them a quicker recovery time). Although there are many negative effects of steroids, they are creating homerun hitting monsters. It is known to many people that the homerun record back in the day was set by Roger Maris after breaking the Great Bambino’s record of 60 homeruns in a single season. Since then we saw a tremendous jump in the number of homeruns per season due to the steroid era. Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, and Barry bonds shattering these records year after year. It was a race to see who could get to the top and Bonds eventually came out with the crown of homerun king with 73 homeruns in 2001. With the help of steroids these men are at the top of the list and in the history books forever. People loved the late 90’s and early 2000’s because of this steroid era but they do not realize what this drug has done to the game of baseball. There have also been many studies about the ethics of steroids pertaining to baseball.
Using steroids is a moral issue but it is way more complicated than people assume. During the steroid era, the use of these drugs was more accepted throughout organizations and it was a common occurrence. A lot of people knew that this was going on and they proceeded to let it continue in their establishments. Most of the teams with players that were using steroids knew that they were doing it and they just turned their head and walked the other way. Then one day it became one of the biggest deals and soon it was one of the biggest crimes that baseball has ever had. Not only are these steroids causing controversies in the MLB they are causing immense problems in the public and the judicial system. For instance when
