Once you have reached more than 8,000 meters up the mountain you are in area called the “death zone”. The death zone is pretty much the most extreme version of all the obstacles and dangers you face during the entire climb. The lack of oxygen, avalanches, Icefalls, and extreme temperatures can cause people to not think rationally. Either this or they simply can’t make it through.
More people is also something that is extremely dangerous. Climbing the mountain alone there are lots of tight spots and rough spots. But when you add more people it works like a traffic jam and things get more dangerous and more complicated. If someone falls from the top of the line that can cause nearly everyone beneath them to trip and possibly get injured or die.
Up until 2007 the death rate on Mount Everest has been generally steady. It has been about one death for every 10 successful ascents. After 2007 It has changed. There are lots of companies offering climbs for anyone with the money and the bravery to try it. Though this seems fun and safe since there is a tour guide, it isn’t. Basically the only qualification is to have the money which means some are not experienced climbers and don’t legitimately understand the dangers of climbing Mount
