Why did Ireland separate from the united kingdom?

The British isles; the name of a few quite big islands left of the European mainland. This is home to both the English and the Irish (among others).
So, what is the difference between these two people?
Long story short (very short), The Irish are mostly made up of Roman Catholic while British people are largely protestant. This is because king Henry the XII reformed the church which made him the head of the church instead of the pope. (He did this because he wanted to marry a woman, whom he later executed… )

The early years of the war were fairly quiet. Hunger strikes and boycotts were commonplace, that is until early 1920. The IRA started raiding RIC barracks for arms started razing them to the ground , burning them to the ground.
In the summer of 1920, local elections put sin Fein in charge of law enforcement, and in many places the Irish republican police replaced the RIC. The British finally took to respond, a new paramilitary police composed of WW1 veterans, the Black and Tans, were sent to Ireland and they proved to be a brutal force. Violence quickly escalated afterwards.
On the 21st of November in Dublin, the IRA assassinated two British intelligence agents, in response that very afternoon, the RAC and the Black and Tans opened fire on innocent civilians during a football match, killing 15.
In the north, unionists formed the Ulster special constabulary and killed many Catholics, and in the south, the center of Cork was burnt to the ground in retaliation for IRA attacks.
