Why Did Jack Become Evil?
“To be, or not to be-That is the real question”(Hamlet: 1749) In this soliloquy, Hamlet is debating suicide; asking himself the big questions in life. In this line, he is asking himself why is life worth living? Why live when people do bad things? Why live when all we do is suffer? These pessimistic thoughts fail to shed light on the important question: Why die if there is still hope? “He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling.”(64) This passage it perfectly describes how the once “proper” english boy known as Jack Merridew, had become a bloodthirsty, snarling savage. However, the question is why. Why did Jack become evil? “We’ve all got both light and dark inside of us, what matters is the part we choose to act on, …show more content…
Even in the darkest of rooms, there is light seeping through the cracks. In the Lord of the Flies when the island was up in flames, the boys saw an angel in disguise, “It was a white-topped cap, and above the green shade of the peak was a crown, and anchor, gold foliage. He saw a white drill, epaulette, a revolver, a row of gilt buttons down the front of a uniform” (200) Even though there seemed to be nothing for the boys on the firey island, there was still a small flicker of hope. As for whether or not there is still hope for humanity. That is a yes too. “We’re a species that is capable of almost dumfounding kindness. We nurse one another, romance on another, weep for one another.” (What makes us moral) There is just too much kindness and compassion within everyone for there to be no hope left. “Riches and honor are what every man desires, but if they can be obtained only by transgressing the right way, they must not be held.” This quote is saying that it is only human for us to lust for the finer things in life. This lust and greed that we have is not necessarily a bad thing. It is just human nature. If we keep this pure human nature within us, there there is indeed still hope for

In general, while Hamlet’s famous “to be or not to be” soliloquy questions the righteousness of life over death in moral terms, as much of the speech’s emphasis is on the subject of death. However the significance of this quote to me is different because I did resort to extreme thoughts like Hamlet. I look at this famous line as it is up to you to be the best you can be, and life may knock you down a. I started high school with no confidence in myself, which led me to pretty much sleep through the first first semester—and if you don't believe me just ask Mrs. Todd, she remembers. The point I am trying to make is once I started believing in myself, and others did so with me, I was able to look past the things that brought me down in life and I hope you guys learn that as well, I let the negative things in life like my disability and my schooling situation bring me down like Hamlet and it has been because of this school I was able start fresh. Today I am very proud of all that I have accomplished and the changes I've gone through to lead me on the right path as I am now eligible for university this year— something I did not see myself being able to achieve. Hamlet was very important in teaching me what I wanted to be and what I did not want to…

The line “to be, or not to be, that is the question” refers to being alive or dead, but can apply to many different conflicts in life and within ourselves (III.i.62). The tragic play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, brings out many of these inner battles of madness with oneself, which can include choosing life or death for oneself and others. The play Hamlet tells the story of a boy, whose father was murdered by Hamlet’s throne seeking uncle, Claudius. Hamlet portrays many examples of madness, but points out the question of whether Hamlet’s and Ophelia’s madness is real or fake.…

    Perception In Hamlet

The play sees Hamlet questioning himself and his reasons to live relatively frequently, including of course, the famous line “to be, or not to be” (3.1.62), but also in lines such as “Who’s there?” (1.1.1), which as the first line of the play sets a tone of questioning identity and existence, and also ties into the uncertainty theme from the previous paragraph. With Hamlet at one point praising his love, Ophelia, and at the next arguing with her, going from depression and dramatic death wishes to promises to avenge his father’s death, who he is and how he sees himself is almost constantly changing through the text, and this reflects the theme of identity and existence. This also ties into another theme I annotated, which was the idea of words against actions, and how what people say contrasts with what they really think or the actions they take- their thoughts and actions are much more clear expressions of their identity, and yet a play that relies on dialogue allows for identity to be hidden behind lies and…

This message is not only in this soliloquy, but is found in several other places in the play. After Hamlet’s father died, he became very depressed and even cursed God for making suicide a sin. “O that this too too solid flesh would melt, Thaw and resolve itself into a dew, Or that the Everlasting had not fixed His cannon ‘gainst self-slaughter.” (Act 1, Scene 2, Lines 131-134) Clearly, Hamlet mourning for his father has forced unhealthy thoughts to come to mind. In the “To Be or Not To Be” soliloquy he also speaks of his own suicide, but in a less forceful manor. In the opening lines Hamlet poses the question: to be alive or not to be alive. “To be, in Hamlet's eyes, is a passive state, to "suffer" outrageous fortune's blows, while not being is the action of opposing those blows. Living is, in effect, a kind of slow death, a submission to fortune's power” (Patronella) Clearly, this shows that Hamlet thinks that death will be peaceful and will leave him with no more pain or sorrow, while life is a sea of troubles that he cannot…

Before discussing the eminent ‘to be or not to be’ soliloquy itself from Act 3 scene 1, it is imperative to comprehend the events of which occurred prior to the speech. Formerly in act one scene two, Hamlet was contemplating his suicide at the same time as cursing God for making suicide an immoral option. It has been made abundantly clear at this point of the play that Hamlet has been outweighing the positives and negatives of his suicide for quite some time, however he is aware that if committed, the action could make the afterlife worse than his present situation. To begin the soliloquy, Hamlet voices the well-known question ‘To be, or not to be; that is the question’ which is an example of antithesis.…

In his play, Shakespeare expresses existential dilemma through Hamlet. Hamlet’s life so far has gone roughly in a negative direction. His father, the King of Hamlet, has passed away; and disappointingly, Hamlet comes back to a crowd that is busy acknowledging the new king, Claudius, and is forgetting about the death of his father. Shakespeare uses language to express theme through Hamlet’s soliloquy, “To be, or not to be”. In his soliloquy, Hamlet asks himself whether he should kill himself, or keep going. Hamlet illustrates the strain that many people feel at one point or another, the world is just too much.…

Hamlet's famous “to be or not to be” speech is supposedly the greatest, most significant, and intriguing creation in all of English writing. Shakespeare investigates the subject of life and also the subject of death and even inquiries what happens after death, all while Hamlet is debating on whether or not he needs to end his life or keep on battling through his unhappiness. The beginning of the speech establishes some sort of stability. There is a direct struggle of want to being dead or alive.…

Hamlet is surrounded by death. However, he is the only character that confronts death philosophically. Despite the revenge he is planning, Hamlet considers taking his own life. He strives to extract revenge upon Claudius, but the more guidance he seeks, the more lost and indecisive he becomes. Hamlet seriously questions if life is worth living from his life crisis. This is seen in Hamlet 's most famous soliloquy, that is said at the kingdom of Elsinore, before being spied upon by Claudius and Polonius. "To be, or not to be? That is the question: / Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer / The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, / Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, / And, by opposing, end them? To die, to sleep— / No more—and by a sleep to say we end / The heartache and the thousand natural shocks / That flesh is heir to—’tis a consummation/ Devoutly to be wished! To die, to sleep. / To sleep, perchance to dream—ay, there’s the rub, / For in that sleep of death what dreams may come / When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, / Must give us pause. There’s the respect / That makes calamity of so long life. / For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, / Th ' oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely, / The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay, / The…
