The origin of this document was the CIA and it was prepared for the National Intelligence Officer of the USSR and Eastern Europe. The document was also prepared in coordination with the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, the Department of State, Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency. Information available until 27th of September 1979 was used in the document and it was declassified under the Freedom of Information Act on February 3, 1996. The purpose of this document was to inform top members of the US government and intelligence agencies about the current options and threat of the USSR’s operations in Afghanistan. This document is valuable because it offers insight into the opinions of top US intelligence agencies and experts during the early stages of the war.
