Why did the 1848 revolutions fail?
The Revolutions of 1848 began in Sicily, Italy, in January 1848. Italy during this time was not an independent nation like it is now, it was broken up into smaller states which were controlled by the Austrian Empire. This revolution was started by Italian nationalists who wanted independence from Austrian rule. The nationalists were initially successful in establishing an independent republic and it happen to only last 16 months, however this was before the Bourbon rulers regained control. It too failed because of the ineffectiveness of the National Assembly and the Prussian Assembly and inability to decide on territorial limits of Germany. There was a weakness of revolutionary forces in the German lands which was evident from the start and it took an external event (revolution in France) to ignite it. There was also a problem with different revolutionary forces with differing aims. Rulers conceded very quickly, so later they could return and take control of situations with their armies whole, there was a lack of effective leadership – they needed a strong leader to unify the people behind one solution this was a major problem as its important to have someone who is strong minded to be able to be the centre of help and advice for those who need it and not to mention that there was terrible class divisions just like in today’s society and that also meant middle class liberals failed to get support of
