He was a half-brother of Humphrey Gilbert. In 1585, he organized the trip to go to the New World but he himself never went, instead he sent out 107 men to set up Roanoke which the colonist thought it would be perfect to place in a swamp. A couple of years later in 1587, he sent out 117 men, women, and children this time with a leader by the name of John White, there for the colonist and was told they needed supplies so he agreed and never returned.
