This paper is on whether an orangutan is a good pet to have. I chose to do my paper on orangutans because they are not the average household pet. They seem to be one of nicest apes in one person's eyes, but others have their own opinions. This paper is to show that it takes a lot to know about these animals in order to take care of them. Most apes like to be free in the forests of Indonesia, and unless people can provide a good environment for these animals, then it may not be an option to have an orangutan as a pet.
The word orangutan means the “person of the forest.” They can grow up to be relatively the size of a 6 foot tall man. Orangutans have 32 teeth, just like humans. The strength of these animals is 7 times stronger than the average human. They are omnivores and weigh about 73 pounds to 180 pounds.Orangutans eat mostly fruit. Orangutans also eat some flowers, insects, and leave. Orangutans mate around the age of 12 and give birth to one young at a time. They are very interesting creatures and have known to live up to 60 years old. …show more content…
It’s very hard to find a reason why it is good to have an orangutan as a pet.
Most people think it is fairly cruel. Although one reason it is a good, is if you saved one from a dangerous hazard and were loyal and raised the monkey to be happy and healthy. Many people think that having an orangutan would be fun and that they are cute as babies, but to keep an adult orangutan and provide for it, takes a lot of work. When you are considering getting an orangutan, you have to consider how the orangutan will live and if he will like his
life.
Orangutans would not make good pets because they are so much like humans and are very dependant on their mothers. Six to eight orangutans die for each orangutan baby sold in a pet store. Orangutans can be very disruptive as they search for food or a item to play with. There are about 900+ orangutans held in captivity. Many orangutans are killed because of the poor handling in the market and the transporting there. Most orangutans live in Indonesia on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, so it’s difficult to to transport them without harm and complete health. Illness, stress, depression, and death are typical of captive orangutans. If we keep trying to get orangutans as pets, orangutans will be extinct in the wild within 10 years.
My conclusion is that it is not okay to have orangutan as a pet because it is cruel and they are an endangered species. Orangutans are loving creatures and very much like human families but when they are separated, they don't get the life they deserve to have. Orangutans are wonderful animals and can’t live a happy life unless they stay in their home lands and live the normal life as monkey.
