Why Do Players Become Addictive?
Video games, they don't cause players to become antisocial, have violent or destructive thoughts or urges, or cause people to become addicted to them. There might be those who think that video games do in fact make players become antisocial, have violent or destructive thoughts or urges, or cause people to have the addictive urge to play them. But in actuality they provide social experiences, give players a place to create and play in a world of wonder, and show the consequences of being needlessly violent. And all of this is given to the player in a variety of worlds where if they make a mistake and temporarily ruin their digital paradise, all they need to do is to wait for the respawn or load the last save file.

Video games don't cause people to be antisocial, this is supported by the fact that most games provide a multiplayer feature where players can have friends play with them on the same console. If a game doesn't have that form of multiplayer features,

Video games aren't addictive, people get addicted to things because they give an overload of good feelings for a short while, and after that period, they begin to suffer withdrawal and are put through a period of time where they feel worse, physically and mentally than before they received the overload. Video games aren't addictive because like chess, checkers, and other board games, video games release a small amount of these good feelings over a period of time with small peaks occurring when the player achieves victory or reaches some other positive milestone within the game. People who would say that video games are addictive would say that because people play them repeatedly for several hours several times a week, that they are addictive. This isn't true because these people most likely just really enjoy playing those games, and might wish to play them more often in order to help improve their skills in that particular video

Although there are casual players who enjoy a game for a brief period of time, there are also people who are overly obsessed. Obsessed players continuously play with no time limits, while a typical player can control the amount of time they play. This is a video game addiction. Video games create more of an addiction than reading a book as they are difficult to quit playing and people tend to have an urge to pick the controller or keyboard back up and continue to play.…

Violent crimes and aggression can be motivated by violent video games. Columbine school shooters(Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold) and theater shooter(James Holmes) all played these games. They would play these games for long hours daily. Studies show violence is motivated by the games that kids are playing. There are many cases that people have conducted research on teenagers that have committed acts of violence after playing video games. The authors of these articles state that video games leads to aggression and violence in the people that actually become aggressive or commit crimes. One thing that wasn’t in to many of these articles was there comparison to the people that play violent video games and don’t commit violence, but they also play for the same amount of time as the people that commit the violent crimes…

Video games have immediate positive effects when prosocial games are played, and even games that are not specifically prosocial can have positive effects as well. A much wider range of video games exist then just the antisocial games that are often exhibited in media, and these games have been used to explore and encourage large group discussions about morality, as well as being used for educational purposes such as exploring historical and social patterns and processes. Video games are uniquely suited to explore complex moral process, and use not only the story, but interaction with the game itself to teach players positive moral behavior and deliberation processes through play itself. Video games are more complex than the majority of the media makes them, and the entire genre of entertainment should not be defined by a small portion of its content. Until the majority of people realize the positive effects video gaming can have, they’ll continue to be seen as destructive, and a lot of potential good will be lost on people who probably need…

The video game player’s personality will be affected in many ways. For example, playing decreases prosocial behaviors, this includes activities such as giving to charity, volunteering, and overall “helping” behaviors. Some studies have proved that video game players lead to an increase in antisocial behavior. These frequently users rather isolate from others and play than socialize. When playing becomes an addiction, their personality has completely transformed into an isolated antisocial person.…

I grew up in a household where video games were a privilege that I had to earn. When I had done all my homework and chores, I was allowed to play video games for an hour a day. As I grew older my parents thought I could make my own choices and did not limit the amount of time I spent playing video games. Many people today think that video games cause children to become couch potatoes, act dumb, and be rude. As a young child, my parents taught me that responsibilities come before the reward. That is why I have a different opinion of video games. I believe that video games can be beneficial to individuals; however, there are limitations. They help children deal with cancer, improve literacy skills, gain educational skills, and stay fit, but individuals should be cautious about the genre of the game and the amount of play time. When these precautions are taken, video games can be a helpful tool for many.…

Video games are basically known as a staple among American teenagers. Many teenage boys and even some girls spend hours of their day staring at the TV screen and rapidly pushing buttons on a controller. Many of the top selling games in America strongly involve violence in their gameplay. These types of games raise many questions about how they affect the people playing the games. Are there negative consequences or are these claims just made up? There is research to back up both claims but the negative effects of violent video games seem to overpower the positives of recreational violent video game play. Manufacturers should enforce their own policy towards people who play their games in a more efficient way. Video games have multiple severe problems associated with the violence that is so heavily incorporated into them. Video games can give a false sense of reality and allow gamers to become so immersed into their game play that lines between real life situations and game play situations begin to blend together. Playing video games can also become an addictive distraction. Many avid gamers can spend hours at a time glued to their TVs playing on their Xboxes, PS3s, and other gaming consoles. This time spent playing games can take away from other activities. Important things like schoolwork and grades can be affected by spending all one’s time playing games instead of focusing on more important things. It can cause people that play the games to go to sleep super late in the night. The students then have to wake up early and go to school tired and will not be able to focus and stay awake to learn the material being taught. Video games also spur a sedimentary lifestyle. Obviously, not getting enough daily exercise leads to weight gain and other health issues. Violent video games also cause behavioral and social problems. These games desensitize people towards killing and steer them in the direction that killing is…

However, Video Games have faced a lot of criticisms especially with the introduction of violent games. Since majority of the gamers are teenagers; it is believed that these games affect the growing minds of these gamers and have made them violent. However, I do not support this statement as violent games do affect the gamers but it is not a long-term effect. As stated by Kyle Orland, “violent video games don't cause any long-term psychological harm”(2011). Researchers find that people serving time for violent crimes typically consume less media before committing their crimes than the average person in the general population. The overwhelming majority of kids who play do not commit antisocial acts. The strongest risk factors for school shootings centered on mental stability and the quality of home life, not media exposure. The moral panic over violent video games is doubly harmful.…

As people play violent video games, it influences bad behavior in the player because when you play these games, you control the person who causes the crimes, shoot and kill your enemy, whether it is a criminal or policeman depending on the game you are playing. Since you are playing the game, you feel more connected with your character in the game and it may affect you in the real world. This is proved according to the article Computer Games Can Rot Your Brain. According to it, “researchers have shown that playing or watching violent video games has led to alcohol consumption, destruction of property and other bad behavior. Video games can also lead to stealing of items, mainly vehicles.” Although the article says that, Akemi, a long term gamer now 22 years old, says otherwise. He says “I have been playing games since I was at least 7, I have no criminal record. I have good grades and have often been caught playing well into the night (that is, 4 hours or more).” Even though Akemi has no criminal record, Brad Bushman, a scientist that has been studying the effects of violent games on people says “aggressive behavior may appear not as criminal activity or physical violence but in more subtle ways in ways people react to or interact with…
