Have you ever wondered how many professional athletes take performance drugs? Well about one athlete out of every ten athletes have taken performance enhancing drugs sometime in their career. Athletes take these drugs to increase their level of play on the field or on the court. These athletes gain an unfair advantage on their opponents. Steroids are ruining sports all around the world, as they continue to attract people to these substances, but we can reduce the steroid use in sports if more severe penalties to our rules are enforced. Professional sports commissioners should enforce a drug testing policy for all athletes even if they have not been using performance enhancing drugs. There are many examples where athletes have taken advantage of these rules, like in 2005, 39 major league baseball players were suspended from baseball for using performance enhancing drugs during the season. There was also another case in 2013 when 13 major league baseball players got suspended from baseball from using performance enhancing drugs during the season. Some of the well known baseball players that have been caught are Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Mark Maguire, and Jose Conseco. These reasons are, mental and physical harm to the body, bad reputations, and the fact that so many athletes use the substances. I know these drugs can be very tempting sometimes but these side effects and risks of steroids should stop athletes from abusing. Athletes who abuse these substances should really feel guilty for what they’ve done because they make their sport dirty and filthy!
