Why Do We Need Gun Control In The United States

Most people regard gun control as a black or white matter with no grey area or room for interpretation. From my personal experience with guns, I have never once felt unsafe near a gun in any way, but unfortunately that is not the case for everyone. Which is why I believe that gun safety and security should be one of our nation’s priorities. That being said, gun laws should be made more strict to not only make people feel safer but also combat America's growing crime rate. Gun ownership in the United States is dominated by caucasian, republican males according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Sixty percent of all gun owners said that the guns the own are used for protection, thirty-six percent are used for hunting and the last twenty-one percent are used for recreation and target shooting. Given these demographics it has been concluded that in the year 2014 that roughly 14,200 murders occurred in America, sixty-eight percent of those murders involved firearms. The term gun control is known to have a negative connotation in society especially to more conservative communities. A great way to prevent gun violence would be to put restrictions on items like high capacity magazines and fully automatic assault rifles. These restrictions would be beneficial in the prevention of violence because it limits the public access to weapons of mass destruction. Other means of gun safety, like further and more specific gun safety training as well as a more complex and secure procedure to purchasing firearms. Both of these ideas would ensure that American citizens that due own guns are not only fit to do so but are properly trained in their operation and safety
