Why I Chose Undeclared Major
Before I enrolled at UNLV last fall, I had no idea what I wanted to do or what career was right for me. I decided that the best option for me would be to go in as Undeclared and I am grateful I did. Being as exploring major has benefited me as a student to decide what major I want to pursue because I have the flexibility to use my general education courses to take classes I am interested in, meeting new people, and having an academic advisor for support. As an Exploring major I could use my elective credits and general education credits to take courses that I am considering as major choices. For example, I have always wanted to take theater and during my first semester of college I decided to take theater 105. However, after taking this course I never I would continue to take course in the theater. This class allowed me to experience what acting was truly about and forced me to get out of my comfort zone to be able to talk in front of large groups of people. As an undeclared major I was able …show more content…
Besides theater I have always thought about English as a major choice, but decided to wait. I knew that two of my general education courses were for English classes, so I wanted to see how I performed in those classes before I declared a major. I took both English 101 and 102 during my first and second semester at UNLV. I came to the conclusion that I do not like writing essays but I do enjoy English as a subject. Although, both of my professors had us to do peer-review of our essays before we turned them in. Through this process I meet other undeclared students who were experiencing the same struggle of deciding on a major and those who were declared and knew what they wanted to do. Because I was undeclared I was able to understand those who were in the same position, learn from those who already had a major, and apply it to myself to deciding what major was for

Throughout almost everyone’s life, there is a focus on the future, more specifically in a future career. As young children, we have the hopes of being doctors, police officers, fairies, and princess. When we grow older we learn about the realities and the limits of our futures. We understand that we cannot be fairies or the Flash. However, the pressure to decide what to do in life is always there. A pressure which is the most prevalent in the first years of college. In “Major Decisions” by James Tunstead Burtchaell he explores the ways that picking a major in college is less of a pathway to a certain career, but more to wider possibilities in the future. The importance in not in the career that can be the final goal but rather the knowledge about…

Many students hear that picking a major and going into college with it is permanent, however, people can change their minds. According to an article from the U.S. Department of Education’s Data Point newsletter in December, 2017, 52% of math majors switched to another major, 28% of computer and information sciences majors switched, and 26% of healthcare field majors switched. They go on to explain why these anomalies occurred; Students underestimated the difficulty of the courses needed to major in mathematics – and changed. Only 28% of computer majors defected because they already possessed a lot of knowledge about computers before declaring that major. Only 26% of health sciences majors switched because that major attracts students who are already committed to “higher” goals like helping people.…

I spent a fair amount of first semester exploring other majors online, through campus events, and by talking with two of my O-Week advisors who are majoring in some of the areas I am interested in (English and SWGS). I realized that it is perfectly okay to change my plans and that it is important to explore my areas of interest. Second semester, I am taking courses in English, Sociology, Psychology, and Communications, and am very excited to continue taking courses in these areas and to explore the other academic areas that I am interested in, such as Jewish…

Academically, the school system has always provided me the tools so that I could learn, but outside the traditional high school classroom, there is a myriad of opportunities where knowledge can be obtained. The summer before my senior year in high school the opportunity to take classes at the University of Louisville was bequeathed upon me. My parents guided me into possibly taking core content material classes, for example, math or science. However, there was a wide range of classes in which I could partake in, but the ones which caught my attention were in the Sociology department. Although my parents were not thrilled with my decision of taking leisurely courses which were possibly not going to count towards my future major in college, I felt it was the intelligent decision.…

Deciding on a major is usually the greatest decision a person makes once high school is over. This will determine the rest of that person's life for many years to come, and for that, is a decision that takes time to figure out. For many people this puzzling part of life is over once they start the career of their choosing; for me it did not end there. The troubles my country was going through at that time have reached my University; riots were happening on campus and the National Guard had to intervene many times. Because of this, my family did not want me to continue my education there, so we started looking at options abroad.…

With a major in management and minors in art, environmental science and accounts, this sparse background can display my versatility and how I can incorporate these skills on a job and open the door to possibilities I didn’t think was plausible. My perspective on education has changed for the best in my opinion because before attending a Liberal Arts college I intended to major in Mathematics with minors in accounts and economics, which I thought at that time was the right path for me. My path was changed because of the exposure I had to various areas of study that made me realize that I was not doing what I should be doing. Although I am still a freshman, there are numerous opportunities available to me simply because of my backgrounds such as the summer camp internship program for people with a major or minor in environmental studies and an internship at Arvest bank due to my background in accounting. Career opportunities can possibly be created in a variety of ways but based on my experience a broader education can lead to more opportunities being created and can easily be initiated by taking that class you never thought you would…
