If asked, “what grade do you deserve in this class thus far,” I would respond with “an A”. In a class where writing, a subjective skill to grade, is a primary source of your grade, I believe grades should be given based off of improvements in their skill rather than their final ability. Due to this Ideology I believe I would best deserve an A this quarter because I have shown major improvements in my writing.
First off, I believe a grade should be based off of improvements because improvements show the amount of work a writer has really put into furthering themselves and their writing abilities. Civilization has only come as far as it has because of improvements and innovation, if the people of the pre-industrialization time frame decided that everything was as good as it could be and no improvements came about than we would still be living a life with no purpose beyond survival. Therefore if society teaches the citizens of the future that achieving a certain goal and never surpassing expectations is the best they can due, society will never improve and be stuck in the flawed time that we call the present. When I first walked into AP Lang and Comp, I thought this is going to be another year filled with horrible writing and pointless reading but to my surprise I was wrong. On our first in class essay I scored a 4 slightly above average and ended the quarter with a score of 6 which was nearly double the average score. The jump from getting a score that was slightly above average to double the average was not one that came with ease, especially given the fact that I was absent quite often.
