Why I Want To Be A Special Education Teacher
I've been a special education teacher for seven years. My first three years were spent working in a Title 1 school with some of the most economically disadvantaged children in our area. I call those my "Trial By Fire" years. Almost every child on my caseload had a heartbreaking story attached to their IEP. I cried a lot those years. I quit going to church because it was too hard for me to sit in the sanctuary full of upper middle class people that had no clue of the horrors I was seeing. That will be a good story for another post. It took quite a bit of prayer and soul searching to pull me out of the pit of that heartbreak. I now work 30 minutes away in one of the wealthier schools in my hometown, and guess what? The stories still …show more content…
Special education is hard journey for everyone involved. It's hard on the kids, the parent, and the teachers that work with those precious souls. Some cases are easy, but some wake you up in the middle of the night with a pounding chest and a hole in your heart. Choosing to be a special education teacher is definitely a calling. No one goes into it for the money or noterity. It's exhausting both mentally and physically. There are days that I have given so much that I barely have anything left to give to my own children. Of course, this could be said for any teacher or person working with children. We all choose this path because we want to be difference makers and find great reward in helping another human grow and succeed. That reward is why I do it. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing a child finally master a concept they've …show more content…
I run small group resources classes and also work with children in the general education setting. My students have a range of disabilities from specific learning problems, autism, ADHD, emotional disturbances, and severe cognitive disabilities. I get the privilege of seeing these children in small groups and within their classrooms. It gives me a unique perspective as a teacher because I am able to see the students beyond the confines of one setting. The purpose of this blog is to share with fellow educators and parents what I have found has worked extremely well to increase success in all children, but especially our most challenged. There are things we can do as both parents and educators that make a profound difference in the lives our children. My hope is that through this blog you will be inspired to think outside of the status quo. Some things are broken within our system but I truly believe they don't have to stay broken. If enough people come together and collectively embrace new ideas, we not only help shape the future for our children, but also play a vital role in shaping the future of our society. I'm excited to take this journey and collaborate with fellow educators and parents on ways to look beyond the walls of our current system in order to promote effective and meaningful change for our

During the past 7 years I have had the opportunity to teach Students with Disabilities (SWD) at a high school level and also to train teachers, in my current position as a Special Education School Improvement Specialist with RSE-TASC (Regional Special Education Technical Assistance Center). Although the achievement gap is true for most student populations in NYC schools, the discrepancy is particularly daunting for the SWD and /ELL populations. In fact what we often find is that extraordinary numbers of ELL students are being referred to special education…

Providing an environment of hope and caring is essential and needed by all children “Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward” Psalms 127:3 (New King James Version). Our children our blessings from God, and He commands us to provide our children with love, spirituality, caring, and to nurture regardless of their abilities. Children with special needs require proactive parents, parents who continually strive to provide opportunities for their children. As professionals we must reach all parents and caregivers and provide them opportunities for education for not just their children, for the parents and caregivers as well. During this process it is imperative to have open lines of communication of teachers and professionals “The bond between parents and professionals (e.g., teachers, speech therapists, physical therapists) can be critical to the child’s development” (Hallahan, Kauffman, & Pullen, 2015, p. 75). Education, communication, and collaboration is essential, and through this collaboration our children and our children’s children can live successful productive…

    Teacher Burnout Essay

Burnout is not uncommon. It happens to everyone that undergoes stressful situations on a regular basis. People often overlook the stressfulness of being a teacher, especially a special education teacher, when often these are some of the most stressed people you could ever encounter. I applaud those that conducted this study for publicizing something that many people forget. That teachers are human, and just like the rest of us they get stressed, and that stress exhausts them. Special education teachers in particular generally work behind the scenes to those that don’t interact with them on a regular basis, so often people don’t see the work that they really do. However, in my opinion, they are the unsung heroes of the education field. I commend them for their work, and admire their patience. Burnout is a real issue in the educational community. When students complain that a teacher is “crabby” they don’t want to do the work for that teacher, and therefore they don’t learn at their full potential. But it isn’t the teachers’ fault, it’s merely a consequence of them giving of themselves. The real problem is that teachers are not recognized, supported, and cared for near enough, and this study made that abundantly…

There are certainly lots of challenges and struggles when taking care of children with special needs but there is something extremely rewarding as well. I am always reminded of the passage of scripture that says: "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction... (James 1:27, ESV)". We are here to work and serve our Great God and Savior, Jesus Christ and one way we have done that is by taking care of children with special needs. It has been a privilege and a joy, even in the midst of trials and heartache.…

I started a family at a fairly young age that includes my two beautiful daughters who before preschool, were diagnosed with a learning disability at the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resource System South (FDLRS). I dedicated my life to ensure my daughters were enrolled in the best schools and programs available. I faithfully attended their Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, to support their learning development and education career. During these sessions I was extremely impressed by the collaboration and dedication of everyone involved on the panel. Throughout the process I felt as if I were a part of the IEP team, working towards all of their achievements. I am proud to have assisted with my daughters’ process in becoming…

There is not a better job than being a teacher. As a teacher, I have an opportunity to make an impact in the life of every child I encounter. As an effective teacher, I know that all children have different learning abilities. In our schools today, there are special education students that are not getting the same opportunities as general education students. One of the reasons a special education student may not be getting those opportunities is the teacher lacks the skills, needed to teach special education students.…

I worked directly with families and together we figured out goals for their child in the community and personally. I worked with many families and some were more motivated then others to help their child succeed. One family in particular had no motivation. They wanted so much from their son but would often find ways to avoid our plans to help their son succeed and the hours that were given to us by the state for me to work with him would flip flop every year. I was devastated but I refused to give up on him. I worked with him as often as I could so that I could see him succeed and one day we had a break through! Reflecting on these work experiences made me believe in Beatrice Wright’s principle that “every individual needs respect and encouragement; the presence of a disability, no matter how severe, does not alter these fundamental…

Throughout my life I have been confident about one thing, one day I will become an intervention specialist. Each and everyone of us has a purpose and most of us fulfill that purpose through work. By becoming an intervention specialist I will be serving my purpose which is to teach students with disabilities how to live peacefully and not let their disability define them. This is something that is really important to me, I want to help as many students as I can feel accepted and be able to learn in a comfortable environment. For some students, learning, comprehending and applying knowledge does not come as easy as it does for other students. There are many different challenges that children face when it comes to learning and each child deserves…

When I read the instructions for the interview with a special education teacher, I immediately thought of my aunt Janet. My aunt had been a special education teacher for as long as I could remember and I knew she was the best candidate for this task. I went to her house in Charlotte, North Carolina to conduct the interview. My aunt was eager to be interviewed, she loves talking about her job, even though she is retired now. Even though the interview only last an hour I felt like I learned more about my aunt in that time period than I had my whole life. I honestly did not know that she had always been a special education teacher, and did not transition over from standard teaching. She was a little disappointed when I did not have more questions to ask, and offered to elaborate more if I needed her to when I began writing the paper.…

One theme that arose in the literature is that many special education teachers leave the field because of the feeling of emptiness when they realize that they had false dream about teaching. Andrew and Brown (2015) explain that the unrealistic expectations of special education teachers is a behavior driven issue that the social cognitive theory play a role in. The psychologist, Albert Bandura believed that not only did behavior play a role in the unrealistic expectations of special education teachers the environment did as well. (Wood & Bandura, 1989) Andrews and Brown (2015) thoroughly painted the picture of how special education teachers can be overwhelmed with the unrealistic expectations for their position resulting in them becoming burnout…

I have a diverse background in education compare to my classmates. I obtained Bachelors of the Arts in Criminal Justice from John Jay College. As long as I could remember I have always loved working with children. I began working with children in high school when I helped coach an equestrian team. It was not until my sophomore year of college that I realized I wanted to become an elementary school teacher. After I spent a semester as a practicum student in a first grade classroom I realized that teaching was my life calling. Following my graduation, I dove into graduate school to further study childhood education. After completing my schooling, I accepted a position at a Title 1 elementary school in my home city. After a year of teaching at this school I have realized in order to grow as an educator, I must be challenged in another county.…
