Why I Want To Pursue A Biomedical Degree
Having a Father working as a Chemist since a young age, science has always played a key influence in my upbringing at home, as well as at school. However I have only found in recent years how interesting and exciting this can be, and so sparking my interest in Biomedical sciences began at GCSE level, where the level of detail, precision and anatomy of the human body captured my attention greatly, I knew from here I wanted a career in such an exciting and developing field. I chose to follow my passion and continued to study biology and chemistry at AS level. I found these very interesting and enjoyed learning, especially human biology and genetics related topics. What appeals to me particularly about biomedicine as opposed to other biological science courses, is the larger, more fulfilling and exciting lab work present. I have great experience working safely and considerately in lab’s, both in biological settings and also very many experiences of handling …show more content…

It has taught me many useful skills such as analytical skills, but has also prepared me with a sound knowledge foundation ready to study my Biomedical Degree. I also study Graphic Design, allowing me to develop my creativity and to apply it to other areas, for example to solve problems from a different perspective and be more creative in my thinking. Within Graphics we also do a lot of essay writing and analysing, relevant to my scientific background. My ability to write in depth and confidently about things I have discovered stems from here. My studies in A-level Business Studies have helped me to further develop my essay writing skills, and also improved my calculations – building upon the calculations and problem solving skills I developed whilst studying AS-level Chemistry. I feel as though my subject choices are broad and varied, yet have prepared me well with the knowledge and skills needed for further scientific

In school, I have enjoyed learning sciences especially when the topics are related to human conditions. Ever since learning about general biology in my junior high school years ago, I have on my own taken additional anthropology, psychology, anatomy and chemistry classes from a local college for further enrichment and have grown very fond of learning the complexity in human machinery and interaction. Occasionally I do find learning these topics too weighty to continue. Whenever that happens now, I would always manage to pull through by remembering that particular good day where I acted as 'an orthopedic doctor'.…

I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

I was introduced to the field I am interested in from my 9th grade biology class. Prior to the course, I had never taken biology or any science, for that matter, that had captured my attention such as this year-long experience. I was intrigued by the subject and fascinated with all the advances in society that have been made by scientists throughout the years. The possibility of being able to do this in the future kept me engaged and I further pursued this interest by currently taking AP Biology. In addition, I was inspired by the change that scientists can make through research and…

I have learned so many things this semester that I never thought I would learn. I learned how to measure vital signs, how to identify what kind of food poisoning someone has, what the percentage is for a child of someone with Huntington’s disease, and so much more. I don’t think that I will end up in a biomedical science career, but who knows what the future will bring?…

There are numerous courses that have to be taken in order to major in Biology; while also minoring in Chemistry as well. There are introductory classes that need to be taken like: “Introductory Biology: Comparative Physiology” or “Introductory Biology: Cell and Development Biology.” Also “General Chemistry” for two semesters with “Organic Chemistry.” One semester of calculus is needed with a second semester of calculus or an equivalent of statistics. Physics is also necessary in order to complete the major of Biology; two semesters of “General Physics I and II.” And finally there needs to be Biochemistry courses taken, such as “Principles of Biochemistry, Individualized Instructions.” Majoring in Biology would grant me various skills in knowing how the world we live in is made up of and how we live as human beings on this Earth. I believe Biology is the most knowledgeable area of study because it teaches how certain things work and what they are made up of. There are numerous career opportunities in Biology, including field work and research as well. Neuroscience is an example of a career which has to do with additional emphasis on Physiology.…

Throughout my education, science based courses have been a central core. One course that left an indelible mark was called, “Medical Careers”. I had the invaluable opportunity to shadow and learn hands-on material from both doctors and nurses at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Hospital. I came into LQHS thinking that it would be easy. I was wrong. High school takes so much energy out of you, yet you know you must strive for the best. Not only does striving for the best mean studying for countless hours or staying up late to do a great job on your assignment that's due but it's the fact that you push yourself to your greatest potential. My parents are the reason for why I push myself to the limits. They've known since I was in third grade that I wanted to be a doctor.…

Biology is fascinating in itself. It teaches us all the ways of life not just from a mankind perspective but through all living things, whether, human species, plants etc. I personally study biology because I want to discover the creation and functions of all living things in the world. Being a Psychology major means studying the mind and in order to better understand the human mind, you have to know the basics in the ways of life and how to incorporate the science of human nature into why people react to life differently, culture, religion, politics, etc. All of these factors are taken into consideration into Biology.…
