The Anglo-Saxons wanted their leader to be strong so he could protect them from danger. Beowulf was exceptionally strong, he was said to be the “strongest of the Geats—greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world (110).” Many of his followers loved him because of his strength, even Grendel was shocked when they fought, “nowhere on earth had he met a man whose hands were harder; his mind was flooded with fear (434).” Today we want our leader to be strong, but in a way where they can handle stress.
