Esperanza in this book learns about pursuing her dreams, one example is when she first moves to Mango Street and has to make new friends. In the book, Esperanza says, “Someday I will have a best friend all my own. One I can tell my secrets to.” (Cisneros, 1984 pg. 9) In the beginning of the book, she has a dream to find a friend that she is very close to. She pursues this dream and eventually in the book
she does find two very good friends, Rachel and Lucy. She has this dream because she feels lonely and she just moved and has no friends. She was motivated to make friends and pursue her dreams to feel worth something.
Another good example from the book where Esperanza learns to pursue her dreams is when her mom tells her the regrets she has of not pursuing her dream. In the chapter where her mom reveals this she says, “I could have been something you know?” (Cisneros, 1984 pg. 90) In this chapter, she says that a lot, it also shows all the things she could have done such as an artist, singer, or a mechanic, but she wasn’t. Esperanza’s mom shows her that she needs to pursue her dreams otherwise she would regret like she did. Since Esperanza’s mom didn’t pursue her dreams she doesn't feel worth something so, she teaches Esperanza all the things she could have done but didn’t. She shows Esperanza that pursuing her dream will be worth it and make feel worth something also.
