It is hard to say what affects someone to become something, especially when we are living a high technology life surrounded by things that can inspire us to become someone we want to be. But I believe that we are all influenced by the environment around us, both positively and negatively. Throughout Esperanza's, Junior's, and my life there are things that have affected us to become who we are. One of the key influences for all of us is our surroundings, specifically the environment where we lived. Esperanza has been affected by her surrounding because she didn’t live in a good environment that she can be proud of her, but rather be ashamed and feel uncomfortable. Junior’s surroundings did not affect him positively except rarely. But the negativity didn’t crush him. Rather it filled him with fuel that motivated him to use this as a tool to become someone. Junior’s surroundings were not a positive thing. He was surrounded by poverty, lack of a good education, and the mentality that he would fail if he stayed on the reservation. In the book of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, it state, “ you are going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad and sad reservation,”(43).The things that surrounded him didn’t give him good options that actually can help him throughout his life. But Junior’s didn’t let this reasons affect him, rather he tried to find a solution for his dilemma. Junior knows that if he stays comfortable where he is, he is not going to be the person he wants to be. So he gets out of his environment and tries to adopt a new life in a new school at Reardan. One of the most important things that made me who I am is my surroundings. I have been surrounded by different things because I have been in different places, but those things give me a little bit of flavor from each place I have been. My surroundings were similar but also different from Junior’s and Esperanza’s life. Just like Junior and Esperanza, I have to move somewhere new to find more hope and opportunity. But unlike them, my surrounding wasn't’ that bad to be able to give me what I need but I just needed extra. When I was in Ethiopia I had a good education with enough food in my belly. I know that if I wanted to be the person I really want to be, I have to move to somewhere where I can find a lot of hope with more opportunities, so I decide to come to the United States. Because of the people surrounded me and because of the environment that surrounds me right now, I have been able to be a successful teenager who is planning and dreaming big things. If it had not been for my surroundings, I might have been lost or be in an uncomfortable position a long time ago.
