Why do some Parents want to ban the worlds favorite wizard? Parents feel that the series presents dangerous ideas and attitudes that are bad for readers. In some parts of the U.S and U.K the Potter books have been banned from being read in school and take out of libraries and even burned in public. (Ross, Shmuel) The most prominent objections to Harry Potter fall in to three categories. Promotes witchcraft, sets bad example’s, and they are to dark.
The trouble with magic one school that banned Harry Potter was St. Marys island church of England school in Chatham, Kent (Ross, Shmeuel) Head teacher Carol Rockwood explained that "The Bible is very clear and consistent in its teachings that wizards, devils and demons exist and are very real, powerful and dangerous and God's people are told to have nothing to do with them."(Ross, Shumel) She added that "I believe it is confusing to children when something wicked is being made to look fun." (Ross, Shumel) "There are many parents who are uncomfortable with their children discussing or looking at or reading anything at all to do with the occult."(Tom Bennett, the Government's behavioural tsar)
The Government's behavioural tsar has said some parents – particularly of Evangelical Christian and Muslim backgrounds believe the children’s book “normalises acts of magic” and that therefore it is exposing their children to the works of the devil. (Espinoza, Javier)
God shows us that witchcraft, sorcery, spells, divination and magic are evil. He hates those practices because they blind us to His loving ways, then turn our hearts to a deceptive quest for self-empowerment and deadly thrills. Harry Potter's world may be real, but the timeless pagan practices it promotes are real and deadly. Well aware that the final result is spiritual bondage and oppression, He warns us:
"There shall not be found among you anyone who... practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord..." Deuteronomy 18:9-12
Harry potter sets a bad example for children. Some people find the Harry Potter books to be inappropriate reading because of the way Harry and his friends behave. Some note that Harry "lies, breaks rules, and disobeys authority figures, including the professors at Hogwarts," and that he ends up being rewarded and praised for his actions. They feel that heroes should be entirely good people who do as they're told and respect others. (Ross, Shmeuel)
Some people think that the Harry Potter books—especially the later ones—are too dark and scary for children to handle. The series begins as Harry is orphaned, and he soon learns his parents were violently killed. There are intense battles. Good people die, suddenly and horribly. This, some say, is the stuff of nightmares, not something to be handed to kids as entertainment. (Ross Shemeuel)
When I was younger I enjoyed reading all the harry potter books and seeing all the movies. My mother and I were very religious people and I still am today. My mother hated that I read that “trash” in school. I told my mother “ I hope you pass the way voldemort killed Harrys parents” and boy she was not happy. She yelled so loud at me like thunder in the sky. And out of no where lighting strikied the earth angrily. My mother never let me read a Harry Potter book again. I was as sad as a dog getting a treat. But now I agree I with her harry potter is no good for children.
