Education: In college, you must enroll in pre-medical programs. Once you complete your pre-medical programs at an undergraduate level and successfully get your degree, you must apply to medical school. The first three years of your career are usually spent with a fellow hematologist so you can gain more experience. In high school, take all of the science classes that you can. Even if they are not related to biology and anatomy they use some of the terms that they use in medical school and in your studies. The more familiar you are with Latin root words the better you are.
Salary: The annual salary for a hematologist ranges anywhere from $73,698-$193,299 [payscale] with the median salary being $137,500. In south Dakota
the average hourly wage in between $52- $77.
Daily responsibilities: the duties of a hematologist on a daily basis include things like analyzing blood samples from patients that are experiencing problems with blood related issues, cross matching for transfusions, and analyze any blood test results.
Reflection: I think that this would be a very interesting career choice. Things like this fascinate me very much. However, I do not know if this career is perfectly suited for me. I really like the salary numbers and working with test results instead of directly with patients. I don’t know if I want to go to school for that long either. Another challenge with this career is that I faint when I see blood sometimes. I’m not too sure why because I don’t think I am afraid of it but it happens a lot.
