A monument is a piece of art that links the events from the past to our present and it is place to commemorate those famous and notable persons or events that shape a nation’s history. Some monuments are immortalized in massive stones, like Mount Rushmore, others in smaller pieces of metal, like the monument of Christopher Columbus in Pennsylvania, and others create them for religious purposes, like that of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The agency needs to think about the impact that this event or person has made. For example, the Lincoln Memorial, which brings back to mind the greatness of that person who fought to bring back together a nation once again. This monument helps to materialize people imagination and brings to memory the existence of the nation because of his challenging work and sacrifice (Source A). Also, the audience is a crucial factor to be consider before memorializing an event. The Lincoln Memorial was clearly made for the citizens of the United States as they know the struggle that the country once had and gives the monument a greater purpose. The size of the monument helps people think about how much remembrance that person or event deserves and the location helps the monument interact and harmonize with the environment and how people feels towards it. Mount Rushmore is one of those monuments that depicts greatness because of its immense size but its location might offend some people. Mount Rushmore looks beautiful where it is but people also have to remember where it is and how it got there (Source C). for some people the location was a sacred land but the fact that those faces were carved into the mountain is like if those sacred lands were vandalized. There are other monuments which perfectly symbolized the size and location. Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is a perfect example. The monument is in the peak of a mountain overlooking the city of Rio so the first thing you see as the sun rises is the enormous person who sacrifice himself to save everyone, stretching his arms.
