Georgia has a rich political background. Three Georgians Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, and George Walton signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Abraham Baldwin and William Few Jr. were the two Georgians that signed the new U.S. Constitution at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Georgia was also the fourth state to join the Union when it ratified the Constitution in 1788. Jimmy Carter was born in Georgia in 1927, and became the 39th President of the United States. Carter so far is the only President that was born in Georgia. Georgia has an interesting voting history. Georgia has voted in every presidential election except 1864, due to secession. From 1868 to 1960 Georgians voting democrats in every election except in 1964 when the Civil Right Act, Georgia then went Republican. Ever since then Georgia has be reliable republican. Looking back throughout history Georgia has been a democratic State. It wasn’t until the Civil Rights Act that Georgia started to shaft towards republicans; democrats, like most southern states lost their votes. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a business degree and shortly after he joined to Georgia National Air Guard from 1966 to 1972. Jonny Isakson was a business man; He opened up a real estate branch for Northside realty, and served 22 years as company president. While he was president of Northside realty the company grown to be one of the biggest real estate company in the southeast. Isakson enter politics in 1976 and served seven terms as Georgia house of representative, and four terms as minority leader. In 1990 Jonny Isakson became a candidate run Governor of Georgia. He won the primary, but lost the general election to Democrat Zell Miller 53% to 45%. Two year later in 1992 Isakson was elected in the Georgia senate where he served one term. In 1996 Jonny Isakson ran in the U.S. senate election, but lost to Guy Milner in the primary 53% to 47%. In 1998 the 6th District congressman and speaker of the house resigned. Isakson quickly enter the race and raised 1 million and put 500,000 of his own money to run in the special election, he won the election by a 40 point margin.
