Why Is Music Important To Me
Playing music has been amazing for helping me learn. When I was in third grade I went to a Celebrate Brooklyn concert where they had an amazing drummer. The patterns and beats mesmerized me just by hitting the snare and crash cymbal. I then learned that drums were the best instrument, so I started playing drums and rock.
I believe that drumming shows a commitment to learning because I have been playing and learning drums for 5 years, and even though sometimes it may be boring or difficult I struggle through it because I know that if I am able to overcome these challenges I will be a better drummer and student because of it. I am a better student because of playing the drums, I know this because the second I started playing drums my math grades went up. The band (named The Rhetorical Question) has helped me with my social life as well as my academics. This is because I get to know lots of people from playing with them or after them. I am better at academics because everyone has to contribute some lyrics and make their own instrument line for the song, this helps me because I can write more fluently and it feels like I know what words fit together.
I have a large interest in music. I feel this way because I grew up listening to music, either in the car or at home on the radio, my dad always loved, and still does, to play the best music, whether it is Rock from the 80s to 90s or the newest hits. I think that this is why I chose to start playing musical instruments, this is also probably why I have an extreme distaste for classical, can go to sleep with Nirvana blaring and yet wake up to the slightest sound of my brother creeping out of his bed. Sometimes when I'm reading or doing my homework I just pop on my headphones and start listening to some Muse, like right now. It just feels easier to concentrate and more

I bought a drum set and watched YouTube videos to teach myself how to play. I joined the concert band in fifth grade and continued to take it as a class until sophomore year in high school. I also played in the jazz band for four years, the pep band for five years, and the show choir for two. The feeling I got in my stomach when I was up to bat in a baseball game was the same butterflies that I got when I played music with a group. As a little girl I wanted to be just like Hannah Montana. As I got older, I wanted to be like Rachel Berry, a small town girl living out a big town dream. I wanted to be looked up to because of my musical talent. Walking into Mrs. Kaiser's 7th hour, 8th grade band, I didn't know that music would have such an impact in my life. Music has become the spark of my intellectual curiosity.
