Why Is NEPA Important?
NEPA is necessary in achieving a high quality environment and is certainly relevant in serving public interests. NEPA’s main goals were to 1)draw attention to the potential environmental impacts of federal projects and programs, 2)and give the public the opportunity to take part in the decision making process. While some may see the EIS review process as arduous, NEPA does its job in driving agencies to fully review how the environment will be impacted by their actions. Thus, agencies are able to discover potential violations with other environmental laws during one review process. Does NEPA adequately facilitate public debate? Well, that depends on what is considered “adequate”. My opinion is mixed about this because NEPA does provide avenues for citizens to get information and participate, but only individuals who are actively interested in environmental protection efforts would know this. The average citizen, especially those with little environmental awareness, would have no idea that they can participate in this process by submitting comments. As many of you have already stated, the Trump Administration would likely see NEPA as a waste of time. However, I don’t believe that NEPA will hinder the Administration’s environmentally harmful pursuits, compared to other laws with more regulatory authority. In regards to NEPA’s scope and whether it should be expanded, I feel that NEPA’ language is broad enough for an all-encompassing reach that can remain relevant well into the future. …show more content…
It seems like as long as the agency follows the procedural requirements of NEPA, there is no follow-up after the final decision.

I believe Naess had a strong point when he said: “As long as you have such a destructive people in our society, we need to have those environmentalists who will protect it and pass laws.” In government, we have lobbyists, governors, and important state and national officials who can make a difference. He is stating we need those governmental influences to pass laws on environmental rights. If these people did not exist, our environment would be in ruins today because people would continue to exploit and abuse of…

An environmental law that is relevant to my current and future employer, which is myself since I am self-employed, is the Clean Air Act (CAA). As a fitness professional I conduct personal training, small group training and outdoor fitness boot camp classes during nearly ¾ of any given year. Obviously I cannot predict air pollution in the same way EPA experts can but I do have firsthand experience of conducting these various fitness activities outdoors in cities where air pollution was considerably higher than other metropolitan areas in the country, and how participants fared. By relating my fitness business to environmental air pollution may seem like a stretch but please consider that I taught outdoor classes in New York City just weeks following the September 11th attacks. The air was rancid, smelled like a demolition site (which I am very familiar with having grown-up with a father who ran a demolition company), and the mixture of fumes and unrecognizable stench, made commuting in the area difficult, let alone participation in high-level cardiovascular exercises. “The Clean Air Act, which was last amended in 1990, requires EPA to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for wide-spread pollutants from numerous and diverse sources considered harmful to public health and the environment. The Clean Air Act established two types of national air quality standards. Primary standards set limits to protect public health, including the health of at-risk populations such as people with pre-existing heart or lung disease (such as asthmatics), children, and older adults. Secondary standards set limits to protect public welfare, including protection against visibility impairment, damage to animals, crops, vegetation, and buildings. The Clean Air Act requires periodic review of the science upon which the standards are based and the standards themselves” (EPA, 2013). Obviously air standards were not top priority during the initial weeks…

As described by the Council on Environmental Quality, “NEPA requires Federal agencies to consider environmental effects that include, among others, impacts on social, cultural, and economic resources, as well as natural resources.” Each action taken by the Coast Guard must be analyzed, including the completion of each of the eleven statutory missions. The Aids to Navigation (ATON) mission is often overlooked but it is the second most costly mission area, representing approximately 16% of the Coast Guard budget in 2012. The Coast Guard maintains over 34,000 aids that mark approximately 25,000 miles of waterways across the country. Each of these aids requires periodic maintenance and each maintenance activity is a federal action that must be evaluated under NEPA. The majority of ATON actions are covered under a Categorical Exclusion, but fundamental problems with the Coast Guard NEPA policy has lead to complications in the Coast Guard’s Seventh…

Since Donald Trump has taken the office of Presidency this past February, there have been many policy changes within our federal government. One of the more notable change of policy has been that of the environment, specifically focusing on the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). President Trump’s viewpoints on the environment are often compared to those of Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan believed in a free market ideology with little to no influence from the government. This led to him deregulating many environmental policies in order to put business before the safety of the environment.…

I agree with you that it is impossible for a nurse to know every disease and treatment options. I think it is important for us as nurses to remember this as well and to stop and think before we answer a medical question. Also the medical field is changing all the time and one way of thinking in the past may not be what research says is best now. In chapter three Fain discusses evidence-based nursing stating that it is, “the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of theory-derived, research-based information in making decisions about care delivery to” patients (Fain, 2013, p47). It is important for us nurses to take the time and do the research so that we can provide the best care.…

On August 1, 2014, the State of West Virginia, joined by Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wyoming files a petition requesting the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. “to declare illegal a settlement agreement in which the EPA promised to issue its now-pending rule concerning existing coal-fired power plants.” In the ongoing case of State of West Virginia, et al. v. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the settlement committed the EPA to impose regulations on carbon dioxide emissions from existing coal-fired power plants under Section 111(d) of the Clean Air Act (CAA)i. The Petitioners state that the agreement is illegal because of existing regulations for coal-fired power plants under a different section of the CAA. The law prohibits the double regulation of these power plants.…
