power and were killed. Napoleon was put under house arrest for a short time because of his relationship to the two brothers. In 1795 Napoleon assisted in the putting down of the royalist insurrection against the revolutionary leadership in Paris. After this, He was promoted to the rank of major general.
Since Napoleons promotion, he has succeeded in many battles where the odds were against him.
In 1796, He was leading an army against the much vaster army of Austria, and succeeded. The battle resulted in a treaty, which added land onto France. He proposed many great battle ideas and was a skilled tactician, and faced another victory when he decided France should attack Egypt. A few years later, Napoleon was a member of a group that overthrew the French Directory, and replaced it with a three man consulate, of which napoleon was the head.
In the next few years, he defeated many of the France’s troops, and signed a peace treaty with Britain, helping to seal his place as head consulate. He then centralized the French leadership, and attempted to restore stability to the post-revolutionary French. He also created the Napoleonic code, which updated the French legal system.
Then in the year 1796 he got married to Josephine de Beauharnais. In the 1799 coup d'état Napoleon seized political power and, eventually in the year 1804 he crowned himself emperor. Napoleon divorced Josephine in 1809 because they had no offspring. He then married Marie Louise in 1810, who was the daughter of the emperor of Austria. The next year, Marie gave birth to Napoleon Francois Joseph Charles Bonaparte, Or Napoleon Bonaparte II as he became known. Napoleon also had a few illegitimate
children.
Napoleon was a masterful strategist, and waged war against various European nations in what was known as the Napoleonic wars. In 1805, the British Navy destroyed the French fleet. That same year he also succeeded in a battle against the Austrians and the Russians, as well as many other battles soon after, each one increasing the power of his empire. In 1812 the French tried to fully invade Russia, but failed due to lack of preparation. Napoleon was forced to resign from the throne two years later, and was banished to the island of Elba. But Napoleon escaped and returned to find he still had many supporters, and the king that had replaced him, fled. In the year 1815 he returned to power in his hundred days campaign. The Austrians, British, Prussians, and Russians viewed Napoleon as their enemy and tried to attack France united. Napoleon’s army struck them first, and after some success, his army fell.
After the defeat, he was forced to step down from his throne again, and was banished to the island of Saint Helena. Napoleon died at age 51 in the year 1821 while on the island, and was buried there. His Napoleonic system is still present in the foundations of French law to this very day. Although he is gone, his actions and effects will be present for many years to come.
