Why Is Pride Worth Someone's Life
Is pride worth someone's life? The old man in the story, The Old Man and the sea, believed that the answer to this question proved to be yes at least for himself. The problem that the old man faced happened out in the middle of the churning sea. He had been fishing for the past couple of days with no success until he spotted something down deep, the fish of his dreams! First of all, everyone can agree that the old man was a good fisherman, after all he had been fishing for decades. Unfortunately, many people believe that he was not a very good fisherman since he hadn't caught a fish in more than three months. The old man should have cut the big fish loose for these three reasons: the old man was tired, he already had a fish, and he could have injured himself. First and …show more content…
Undoubtedly, the fish could easily have pulled the old man down into the depths of the sea. Being alone out on the raging sea could have caused any number of problems that could have cost the old man his life, and his town, worry. While he was fishing, a group of sharks discovered him. The sharks could have taken his arm off while he was trying to fight them off. One final motive for why the old man should have cut the big fish free is that he already possessed a fish. During the fight with the sharks, one of them grabbed large chunks of the fish he had in his boat. Something that the old man discovered once he had hooked the bigger fish was that the fish was much too large to easily reel in, not to mention that he already had a nicely sized fish in his boat. Surely, one more fish was not worth his life or this much effort. Now many people would disagree with the points that have been stated. On the other hand, others would say the old man should not have cut the fish loose. A point that they would bring up is that he would be a hero to the town for catching such a large

After he pulled the great, flopping fish into the boat, the man gave him a kick and hit him on the head to end his life. Looking down at his seemingly unending line perpendicular to the boat, he grabbed the line and felt for any tension on it. At first he felt no pull, but then he sensed a small tug. After freeing the line from the stick so that the fish would feel no tension, the pull stopped. Oh, the old man thought, I hope that he comes back for more.…

The Old Man by the Sea was an exciting book with some sadness once you got toward the end. In The Old Man by the Sea it was a depressing story of a poor man that lived alone only knowing a young fourteen-year-old boy. The boy was forced to leave the old man because his parents made a decision to go with a fisher man that was constantly catching fish. But the boy didn’t want to leave the old man, he wanted to stay with the old man. On that eighty-fourth day the boy was of course unable to go with him but he was able to help the old man get ready to go out to sea by giving him coffee and sardines that morning. He also put the spear and nets in the boat for the old man. Since the old man decided to go further out than usual he was able to snag him fish although he did not know the great size of the fish he could tell this was his biggest fish he has ever hooked. The old man kept vigorously reeling the fish did not even let up a little bit. After a day and a half of sticking with the fish he finally was able to reel him in. On the way back home everything was fine except due to him having to spear the fish causing blood sharks were attracted to…

Many of the characters in The Things They Carried exemplify tremendous pride in their actions, causing them to do good or bad things that they would not have the courage to do otherwise. O’Brien’s personal experience shows that the fear of being shamed before one’s fellow soldiers is a powerful motivating factor in war. He does not want to fight in a war he believes is unjust, but he does not want to be thought of as a coward. This same attitude among numerous characters sets a consistent theme in the novel.…

Beowulf the 7 to 10th century poem is an epic, a long narrative poem with a serious tone, spotlighting a heroic figure whom carries the responsibility of a nation. Beowulf is a tale of heroes, monsters and the bond of comitatus. Comitatus is defined as bond of companions, typically between a leader and his followers. This bond has the strength to bring two warring tribes together, and has the power to win battles. This relationship is shown in more than one way throughout the story of Beowulf. One example of this relationship is the comitatus shown by Beowulf to Lord Hrothgar and his tribe, when he arrives to help defend the tribe against the monstrous Grendel, as well as when the young warrior Wiglaf comes to Beowulf’s aid as he is battling a dragon in the final moments of his life. Even though both of these examples show an extreme loyalty to a leader, they are different in the aspect of purity. The comitatus shown by Wiglaf to Beowulf is more pure than the comitatus shown by Beowulf for Hrothgar and his people, Wiglaf was humble and selfless, his loyalty was fueled by bravery and love, while Beowulf was strong and prideful, his loyalty was fueled by the desire to prove himself as a brave and skilled warrior, not by love.…

In lines 22-23, the speaker gives a detailed view of how the fish is in a near death experience and is fighting for its life. A small use of figurative language is used to describe the view of the fish’s gills as frightening (24). This proves how scared the fish was getting as it was almost down to its last breath. The gills are revealed as “fresh and crisp with blood” to continue to reiterate that death is on the way through imagery (25-26). This shows how man’s power can either be used for the better or the worse in the world. At this point, readers can see how the environment depends on the actions of human beings. The speaker then starts to think about the interior of the fish; they speak about its “white flesh”, “bones”, “black and red entrails” and “pink swim-bladder”. As the speaker looks into the fish’s eyes (34-35), the speaker makes note of how “shallow” and “yellow” its orbital area looks. In lines 37-40, the description of the eyes is continued. At this moment, there is a showdown between the narrator and the fish. Their eyes do not leave each other and the speaker starts to reconsider its actions. It is safe to infer that the fish’s eyes read desperation as it was facing death and was in need of a miracle. Once again, this establishes how much a person can influence the world through positive or negative actions. Bishop describes how sad the fish looked (45) and later emphasized on how intense it…

As this begains, The old man uses his physcial strength in order to get the fish. For example, when the old man tries to reel up the fish with all he's got. ''Now! he said aloud and struck hard with both hands, gained a yard of line and then struck again and again, swining with each arm alternately on the cord with all the strength of his arms and the pivoted weight of his body''(pg 44). This quote shows the old man using the power he has in his body in order to get the fish. Moreover, the old man uses bronze more than brains to try to reel up the fish as fast as he can. This relates back to the theme because the old man is using more force than brains to catch the fish.Meanwhile, the man stiLl uses his physcial strength to hold the line. ''When the old man had gaffed her and clubbed her, holding the rapier bill with its sandpaper edge and clubbing her across he top of her head until her colour turned to a colour almost llike the backing of mirrors ,and then, with the boys aid, hoisted her aboard, the male fish had stayed by the side of the boat''(pg 49). Arrogance is an emotion which almost all cultures love to hate. Even from antiquity, this most human of emotions, sometimes given names such as “pride”, “hubris”, “elitism”, and “pretentiousness”, has appeared as a force of undoing, evil, and destruction in drama, mythology, scripture, poetry, art, and literature. Historical examples abound, from the view of hubris as the principal crime one could commit in ancient Greece (and therefore its use as the principal flaw by which the protagonist is undone in Greek tragedy) to the mention of Pride as one of the Seven Deadly Sins in Christianity. The modern era doesn’t escape either: “pride comes before the fall” has become a common maxim, while commonly sought-after qualities in an employee include…
