Public safety lately, has been at an all time low. With the recent events of mass violence that
have occurred, this is an issue that must be discussed at length in order to educate the public
and prevent future events. We must take the necessary steps to take the state of public safety
in the US back to its originally gold standard. This can be achieved through respecting one
another, changing how shooting are reported in the media, and reporting suspicious activity.
The current state of public communications in the the US and the world is at an all time
high. With social media, telephones, and video chatting anyone is the world can basically speak
with anyone they please. This …show more content…
also has a severe consequence; many people have much less face
to face communication. This has lead to much greater disrespect amongst people due to the
lack of immediate consequences. People must learn to be much more kind to one another,
bullying has caused people in the past to commit heinous crimes, such as the Columbine
shootings.
Getting the public to understand the criticality of being kind to others whether they
are face to face or not would be one of my main point in the presentation.
Another point would be to change the way that media presents the stories on these
horrendous events. Whether it be a shooting, bombing, or other form of terror the perpetrator
tends to be the thing most remembered from the event, not the victims. Convincing the media
to stop revealing the names of the killers and putting a greater emphasis on remembering the
victims would be a vital step in lowering rates of violence. This would give the killers less reason
to put their plans into action if they know they wont be remembered for their actions.
The arguably most important part of stopping these people is the get the public involved
in the search effort. Convincing people that they wont be called paranoid or insane for
reporting suspicious activity is especially critical. Whether it be on social media or just seeing a
person acting strange their report could say lives. Most people that commit these events
leave
a trace or warning that they’re going to commit these crimes. The Umpqua Community College
shooter posted warnings on social media, the Charleston church shooter posted racial hate and
photos of himself with guns on social media, and many other did the same. Reporting these
things if seen by anyone could be the difference between a body count and an avoided disaster.
Public safety is at a tipping point right now. We must take these simple steps now
before we have to do drastic things to keep out citizens safe. Given the recent events we can
only assume that these events will repeat themselves, we have to be prepared for them and
take the steps to prevent them.
