And Then There Were None, written by Agatha Christie, is a mystery novel full of tragedy, suspense, and murder. The guests all meet for the first time on Soldier Island after an invitation is sent to them from a person named U.N. owen. Throughout the novel, the characters are murdered one by one. Each character is responsible for a different act of murder during some point in their lives which they have never been punished. Their deaths will take place as a result of philosophical justice since they were not punished in the legal system. At the beginning of the novel, Soldier Island is the destination of the guests. The island will be the final resting place of all that are present. General McArthur says, “Best of an island is once you get there-you can’t go any further….you’ve come to the end of things…” McArthur is saying that the island is more than just a setting for the murders to come, but the island represents mystery and the end of things Soldier Island is described as a cold and barren rock with no outlet for safety or refuge.
For example, Vera Claythorne accidentally allowed a child to die while in her care. Thomas and Ethel Rogers let a former employee die in order to gain the employees inheritance. Dr. Armstrong operated on a patient while intoxicated and in turn the patient dies. The crimes committed place a large amount of guilt on the characters which affects the order in which they are killed. The judicial system does not come into play with the characters in the novel.
