Since Elizabeth came from a wealthy family, she used her wealth and valuable items to help charities. Elizabeth even gave away royal clothes and goods to troubled people in her village. In 1220, a deadly disease spread through Thuringia. Elizabeth did everything she could to take care of everyone. She then decided to build a hospital for all the sick and poor people in Thuringia. Everyday she would take time out of her day to hand out bread to the poor. Elizabeth would risk her life for anyone because she was so loving. She saw everyone as her brothers and sisters. One day while Elizabeth was delivering bread to the poor, Ludwig approached her. He asked her to stop people from thinking she was stealing treasure from castle. Ludwig then asked her to show him what was under her clock. When she did, white and red roses appeared. “Ludwig believed that God's protection was evident.” This was one of the first stories associated with christian saints with roses. Another miracle that occurred while Elizabeth was alive was her husband's mother said there were lepers in her and Ludwig's bed. Once they heard this Ludwig went racing to the room, to remove the leper. As soon as her got to the room he pulled over the sheets to see that there was no leper in the bed. He was confused. Instead of seeing a leper he saw an image of christian christ's crucified. This was a hug miracle to Ludwig. After Elizabeth passed away, people would visit her grave for healing.
