In the beginning Italy was not a unified country until the 1860’s which was why at the start of the Renaissance Italy had 250 states. The popes ruled the central Italy, but couldn’t extend their control to the rest of Italy. The Renaissance was strongly supported by the ruling families of the Italian city-states and they employed a lot of the leading artists and scholars at their courts. First offenders would get a slap on the wrest or in this case slaps all over their body, but it got worse quick to the point where you could lose an eye and that wasn’t the worst that you could earn. The worst is the hanging and the law contained no gradations for repeaters they would go start to a hanging the second time. Homicide and an assault that had blood drawn is left up to the discretion of the judge. Though further questions of the person’s guilt were asked and if it was not securely established by a confession or a testimony then it was left up to the judge’s perception of the case. They didn’t have “Innocent until proven guilty” back then it was too limiting of a distinction to apply to their fluid
