Why Shakespeare Should Not Be Taught
Should or should not Shakespeare be taught in 9th grade curriculum? People have different opinions on if it should or should not be taught. A few reasons it should be taught is because Shakespeare presents universal truths, one can learn new vocabulary, and Shakespeare is entertaining. To begin with, Shakespeare presents universal truths. Universal truths are truths that the whole world can understand and relate to. “His plays still tell the truth boiled down to their essences” (Petri 374). Shakespeare's stories are remarkable with complex story plots that show causes and effects. He explains his character's point of view and their struggles. “We are confronted with universal truths” (Janmohamed 379). Shakespeare has influenced audiences around the world ever since. His timeless plays transcend time and culture. “The audience will see themselves on the stage” (Janmohamed 379). His plays relates to the audience's lives, making them more interested in watching the plays. For example, some people can’t always be with the one they love, and life doesn’t always have a happy ending.
