Why Should Churches Engage In Sports Ministry
The question of what should the church do with sport or recreational ministry is something that is often asked. As discussed in previous papers, the use for sports ministry is so vast. The use for sports ministry is not just for those who are in church, but also those who not Christian’s as well. As Tim Briggs in the article, “What is the Gospel-Centered Sports Ministry Movement?,” Just as the gospel is not just for the nonbeliever, the same applies to the sports ministry. Just as Jesus is for everyone, so is sports, as long as the people would like to participate. Dr. Greg Linville in the article, “Sports Outreach Ministry- Why Should Churches Engage in Sports Ministry?”, he speaks about how the two missing groups in churches are men and the youth and sports and recreational activities are what they flock or love to run to and if this is the case then why not have sports and recreation to bring in those who are not participating in church? …show more content…
When I first read that, I paused for a moment and truly ponder on what this meant. Ministry to sport would be more of a chaplain position or a leader on a team that is praying for the team or trying anyway to spread the gospel intentionally. While ministry through sports would be more of sports or recreational activity that would be used for an evangelical purpose. This is used quite a bit during mission trips that are geared towards young children and this is a technique that will help the kids enjoy the teaching of the missionaries.
