The Importance of Sports Safety

Sports can be a very dangerous game depending on how you play the sport. You can be too aggressive in the NFL and seriously hurt someone despite the gear you wear. You can be a MLB pitcher and mess up on a pitch and hurt a player by throwing a pitch at a player’s head. You have to be very careful how you play the sport you are playing. Sports are supposed to be competitive and fun, but you have to remember to be safe and care for the other competitors you are competing against. Sports safety is a big deal, and is very important in all sports types. In the NFL, there are rules to help players stay safe. One of the most common and important problems you hear about is when a player gets a concussion. A concussion

All players when they bat wear a helmet. The catcher wears a face mask to ensure that they do not take a ball in the face. And a catcher wears a vest, and arm gear, and leg gear to protect themselves. The umpire wears protective clothing to make sure he/she does not get injured by a pitch. Baseball is a sport that is just as rough to play as football, and is important in regards to sports safety. A pitcher in baseball can cause harm to a player. When a batter gets hit by a pitch, they are evaluated to make sure they did not hurt a body part by the pitch before they head to first base. Pitchers are trained and coached to make sure they pitch correctly pitch right. There are pitchers in the MLB that can pitch over a hundred miles per hour, and it would really hurt to get hit by a hundred mile per hour fastball. Pitchers and even the other eight positions are switched out from time to time, to make sure a player is not doing too much on their body. A pitcher can hurt their shoulder if they start as a pitcher. A batter can even hurt their arm when they swing trying to hit the ball. That takes a lot to the body, so that is why players are switched in and out at the positions of baseball. They get a break and a chance to rest. The MLB is a tough sport to play, and a long sport to play. A injury you will often hear in the MLB is when you mess up your rotator cuff in your shoulder and usually need surgery to repair it. When you are in a sports game, and your star player is making plays, and trying to win you the game, you have to make sure the players safety is the most important thing. When your player gets injured, you can't just put him back in the game just because he/she has been doing really well, you have to make sure that they have a chance to get over whatever injury they have. There is plenty of games for your player to be able to play well. A player who cares about the team they play for, and cares about trying to be the best player, needs a coach to be able to understand that when they get injured, sometimes they need a break. If a coach or staff lets a player play who is not exactly one hundred percent can get more injured than they were before. A player needs a break from the game they play every now and then. Players are only human, and can not always give you their all 24/7. When a player has time to rest, they can give you their all. Staff may not like it when their star player is not playing. But that should not matter. The most important thing to a coach or staff of a sports team is the shape and safety their players are in. A player can not be what you want them to be unless they are healthy. That is why coaches and staff should always put the safety of their players first, before worrying about them winning a game for

One major similarity between football and baseball is the amount of hours of running you put in. It’s the kind of running where by the end of the day, your legs still feel like they are running and don’t even get me started of the feeling of Jell-O legs. Not to mention the dizziness and nausea that comes with the endless drills, and too much of or too little water in your system. The big difference between running for baseball players is we don’t have to run with pounds of pads and equipment on us. Also in baseball it’s not so much endurance running as it is quick explosiveness burst of speed running the base-paths. At the end of the day, all the tedious running and practice pays off, come game time and the fans are there rooting, cheering, or even booing you on.…

Baseball and softball have the same rules about the pitches that are thrown. If a batter receives four balls, they automatically get first base. If a batter receives three strikes, the batter is out. A foul ball is counted as a strike. In softball and baseball, after someone hits the ball into fair territory they must drop the bat and run to first. In both sports, the defense must get three outs before switching to offense. In both softball and baseball, runners must advance on ground balls hit if a teammate occupies the base behind them, starting with first base. If a fly ball is hit and caught, a runner must return to their base until the ball is caught before advancing. If the caught ball is thrown to the original base first, the runner is…

A baseball is made up of 4 main layers. At the center of the ball is a rubber core. Around the core is a layer of cork. Then twine is wrapped around the core. Over the twine is stitched a layer of leather that makes up the cover of the ball. They stitch the ball because that way the twine part of the ball does not come out like stuffing from a pillow. The ball is made the same for both of the leagues except for the tee-ball league. The middle of the tee-ball is made up of this soft component so it will not hurt as much when you get hit by it because you are just beginning of your baseball career if you want that to be your career.…

A tougher part about baseball is the speed of the pitch. An average pitching speed in high school is about 70-75 MPH. Moving to about the mid 80 in college, and ending in the upper 90s to the low 100s in the major leagues. Because the ball is traveling that fast, batters are taught to start there swing as soon as the ball is released, giving themselves about .44 seconds to see the ball and swing to make solid contact. Milwaukee Brewers, Jeremy Jeffress, stats in his latest interview “ I have pitched better since wearing a Brewer’s jersey, in fact, much much better.”…

The basic objective in baseball is to win by scoring more runs than your opponent. Rule 1.01 of Official Baseball Rules states, “Baseball is a game between two teams of nine players each, under direction of a manager, played on an enclosed field in accordance with these rules, under jurisdiction of one or more umpires.” (Major League Baseball, 2010, p.1). The infield is a 90 foot square and the pitchers mound is 60’6” from home plate. The ball is round and “formed by yarn wound around a small core of cork, rubber or similar material, covered with white horsehide or cowhide, tightly stitched together.” (Major League Baseball, 2010, p.6). The bat, one piece of solid wood, is a “smooth, round stick not more than 2.61 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length.” (Major League Baseball, 2010, p.6). While the rules and objectives are generally the same, just what differences exist between Major League Baseball and…

Most know how important it is to be mentally healthy while participating in any competition. But in sports competition, it may just be more important to be physically healthy in order to compete at a productive, truly competitive level. As the competition in sports from pee-wee football leagues all the way through professional and international athletics increases, so too do the amount of injuries and magnitude of these injuries. Due to a more competitive sporting atmosphere along with the development of a continually bigger, stronger, and faster class of athletes, new technologies and equipment need to be developed. Also, a broad range of athletes and sports must be considered. Just as times must continually change to accommodate for the rapid growth throughout the nation, so too must sports change to accommodate for the rapid expansion of sports and the rise in athletic competition. Sports injury must be discussed as to how prominent injuries are caused in order to define what must be done to develop new technology. In order to discuss sports injury, it first needs to be given more recognition throughout all skill levels in order to protect athletes.…

The health benefits of athletics are clearly visible, such as weight loss and improved fitness, and it also prevents drug use. There is also the negative that in time your body breaks down from the pounding of a physical sport like football, and the ever present danger of injury from a freak accident like landing on a teammate’s foot during basketball, or like the way Alexander Montgomery tore his ACL simply jumping for a chest bump in celebration. Athletics are dangerous, but so is life. Athletics have many affects both direct and indirect which help an athlete’s health and in some cases other people across the planet.…
