Final Exam: Working for amazon.com ( The Hunger Games)
Studies by Common Sense Media show a decline in teenagers reading. This is because of new technology. Even though new E readers mean there are more platforms than ever to read on, the percent of kids who read for pleasure still went down. Kids starting as early as 10 years old are more attracted to some of the digital media platforms than reading. The studies do not say that kids are reading less because they’re spending more time online but this is believed to be part of the problem. In interviews with high school kids say, “Generally I talk on the phone. Or I watch Netflix shows, or Hulu shows, mostly TV. That’s it.” and “I don’t read for pleasure either, unless it’s for a school assignment,” “I’m usually on my phone or watching TV, too.” Some also say they want to read but just don’t have the time for it from school work and sports.
Many experts believe that reading leads to success. Research shows that when teens read more than just inside their classes they do better in school. Reading builds teens’ vocabulary and helps them do better on test. Other than just helping teens in school, reading also teaches them more about people and the world. It can show them what is going on in the world around them. It is important to encourage teens to read and there are many ways to do so. A great start is to set an example by letting your teen see you reading for pleasure. Also try to leave any sort of reading around the house such as books and magazines. See what your teen is interested by what reading material you left around the house goes “missing”. Another way to encourage reading is by making reading aloud natural part of family life. Share an article you clipped from the paper or a magazine and talk about it without making it a burden on your kids.
