Why The Community Should Not Have Banned Books
The community should not have a say in what books are being read in the school. This is because the community already knows about words that are commonly used in books that are banned and they don’t need to learn about it whereas kids need to learn about it because the community hasn’t exposed them to it. Also, teachers know the curriculum and know how to turn bad things into learning opportunities. Communities already have knowledge of things that are written in banned books. They have lived longer and therefore know more about what is being written about. Children on the other hand don’t have knowledge of things in books that are banned. The community doesn’t tell the children about it and that’s why they don’t know. They need to learn about it so that they don’t ever use this type of language in the community. The community shouldn’t have a say in what they read but should have a say in how the language said in the book is used in the community. Teachers can make sure that what they read about is stayed in the classroom and not said in the community. If this was to happen, the community should have a say because it is being used in the community, but if it is not used in the community, it should not be a community effort. …show more content…
Teachers can turn these instances into learning experiences for the class to teach them how different things were back when the book took place or where it takes place. Teachers will explain it better than the community will and turn it into something that the students can actually learn from. This is different from the community teaching them because the community just says that the kids can’t use these words or do these things. The community doesn’t give reasons why these things aren’t allowed besides just saying that they are not

    Banned books are becoming more current in this day of time. People often do not understand the challenge of books or why a book is being banned. Ken Petrilli, the author of “Banned Books Week: Celebrating You (and Celebrating Your (and Your Teens!) Freedom to Read” in the Young Adult Library Services summer of 2009, talks about how he understand, how the parents feel about some books being banned. He also advised ways to make displays for banned books week. Petrilli is a teen service librarian, a musician, and serves on the YALSA’s Intellectual Freedom Committee. “To Read or Not to Read: Understanding Book Censorship” by Deborah Connelly, was published in the Community and Junior College Libraries in the year of 2009. In Connelly’s article, she wants people to know what book censorship means and how librarians deal with people who want to challenge books.     Literature is art, it's how authors express themselves, and that would take that opportunity away from them. Taking that away from an author is like taking away their ability to speak through the pages as they had before. Just because what is in a book doesn’t appeal to someone else, and it wouldn’t be good for a child to read them, doesn’t mean there has to be any sort of ban on any book. Adults may attempt to prohibit books because of suggestive behavior being displayed in them, although kids should be allowed to figure out the wrong from the right by themselves during their lives. Younger children should not be able to have their hands on books with bad behavior and profanity, but as they get older, adults should not heavily guard them from such things. Children need to learn about censorship for themselves at younger ages, while they learn quickly and more efficiently.
