Political compromise in the later years of the Ante-Bellum Period, specifically from 1820-1861, are crucial when speaking in terms of causes of the Civil War. Though the government and politics of such tried fiercly to reduce sectionalist tensions, in the end they were unsuccessful. Out of all the reasons- political and not- the four things within those years that strike most as failures of the government are the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Wilmot Proviso of 1848, the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, and the Presidential Election of 1860.…
The compromise of 1850 was a document constructed by Henry Clay to ease tensions between North and South. The compromise consisted of the following five points—(1) writing a new fugitive slave law, since beforehand white citizens could give runaway slaves room and board and not be penalized, therefore appeasing the South, (2) annexing California as a free state to the Union, an advantage to the North, (3) prohibiting the slave trade, but not slavery itself, in the District of Columbia, (4) reorganizing the Mexican Cession into the New Mexico and Utah territories with the slavery issue being decided by popular sovereignty, and (5) declaring a border between Texas and New Mexico, with $10 million in reparations for the territory Texas surrendered…
t the time when the United States was a new nation, there were a number of issues that needed to be addressed in order for the Union of states to become a working country. In a short period, the North had become more progressive and industrialized. There were larger urban populations and the issues that faced northern areas were different from those that faced the South. When new territories were added to the nation, it was politically relevant that they were added in such a way that the balance of power was maintained. The Compromise of 1850 addressed this balance. The Compromise was a group of five laws that addressed slavery and overturned the Missouri Compromise. The climate of the time quickly becomes one of the northern states against…
The political compromise during the period of 1820 to 1860 was unable to reduce sectional tension during this time period. According to Tom Meltzer and Jean H. Bennett, in their book CRACKING THE AP U.S. HISTORY EXAM, “The new period of expansion resulted in a national debate over slavery, as would every period of expansion to follow until the Civil War resolved the slavery question.” The Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, and… were just a quick fix for the inevitable to come, the civil war. The political compromises of this time period were not able to meet their final goal, primarily because of misunderstandings…
Compromise of 1850 Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky helped the crisis of 1819 through 1820 by proposing compromises. He also had a plan to help the nation maintain peace , his ideas were very important and designed to give both sides that they wanted. His ideas were: 1.California would enter the Union as a free state. 2.The rest of the Mexican Cession would be federal land. In this territory, popular sovereignty would decide on slavery.…
The United States encountered many difficulties prior to the Civil War. As the years went through, it was clear that the Constitution’s laws would not solve many of the issues left on the decisions of the heads of the state. Constitutional amendments were subjected to free interpretation and manipulation and several difficulties remained to be solved, making the threat of a war real and imminent. The Civil War of 1861 became, in fact, a terrible reality, due to religious issues and sectional power struggles.…
During the 1860 election, if Stephen Douglas were to be elected, the country would continue to function with individual state’s deciding the law. This would have delayed the war, but the tension between the north and south was increasing, and a decision would eventually have had to be made. The North and South were unable to compromise; all political parties stood their ground on the issue and rejected proposed plans such as the Crittenden Compromise; which would extend the Missouri Compromise to the pacific (Divine 475).…
During the time period of 1820 to 1854, major arguments and political actions maintained continuity by maintaining a political strategy of compromise in order to preserve peace and the union as seen in the Kansas Nebraska Act and the Missouri Compromise. But the political actions taken in these two compromises fostered a significant amount of change rather than continuity. Although the Missouri Compromise seemed to settle the big issue by the time of the Kansas Nebraska Act came along the conflict had escalated beyond what Missouri could handle. These arguments and actions eventually resulted in war where the problem of slavery was finally resolved.…
Most of the time, compromise helps stop a fight from starting and is generally a way to end a fight. However, the Civil War was only delayed by compromise because both sides didn’t want to give anything up. Compromise’s role in delaying the Civil War was keeping both the North and South happy, but it didn’t help.…
There were many political compromises leading to the Civil War. One of these compromises was the compromise of 1850. The Compromise of 1850 granted California the right to proceed as a free state in the union. In addition, this compromise established where the boarder of Texas would be, granted compensation to Texas for that was attained by New Mexico, established popular sovereignty between New Mexico and Utah. The compromise of 1850 allowed the fugitive slave law stronger and the slave trade in Washington was stopped.…
Most political disputes were mostly over the issue of slavery, the two sides of this issue were should slavery be abolished in the union, or should it be left alone. Because slavery was such a hot topic, many compromises including the Missouri compromise, and the compromise of 1850 touched on slavery, and tried to appease both sides. Compromise seemed to be the best and most effective to use in the early nineteenth century, but by 1860 this no longer seemed possible. The two differing viewpoints had little room for compromise this change being because of political, social, and intellectual reasons.…
The Compromise of 1850 was primarily about the future of slavery in the new territories and the Union. Out of the Compromise of 1850 came “The Fugitive Slave Law”, which gave owners of escaped slaves the power and the resources to procure their escaped slaves. It constituted one of its provisions was controversial federal laws that intended to pacify the slaveholding south and enraged the Northern abolitionist and ultimately provoked the Civil War.…
The Compromise of 1850 was drafted by Henry Clay whose idea was from a Senator from Illinois by the name Stephen A. Douglas. The Compromise was passed by the US Congress on September 1850, mostly to pacify the issue of slavery and territorial boundaries between the North and South. Issues around slavery increased between the North and South. Consequently, ten years after the Compromise of 1850, the American Civil War began.…
Politics had the biggest impact of all the PEGS on the road to Civil War. To start off, In Trigger Events of the Civil War it states,”The case eventually rose to the level of the Supreme Court, where the justices found that, as a slave, Dred Scott was a piece of property that had none of the legal rights to recognitions afforded to a human being. ”This means that, Dred Scott couldn’t get freedom even though he was in free land where slavery was illegal but he was still a slave. In addition, in Lincoln, Abraham “House divided speech” it states, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” This means, we as a nation and our Government cannot handle both slave and free.…
These two differing thoughts caused Americans to rage and compromises to be thrown out the window. All that was required was one final spark to set off the flame that would be known as the Civil War. A new candidate was running for president, and the southern states didn’t like him. They swore that if the new candidate were to get elected, they would secede from the union. The candidate won, and they held their ideals, they left.…
