The year is 1860, and a relatively new country, The United States of America, is distressed. Divided, they argued. The Southern States felt that it was their given right to have slaves, and the northern states felt as if it was something of the past. These two differing thoughts caused Americans to rage and compromises to be thrown out the window. All that was required was one final spark to set off the flame that would be known as the Civil War. A new candidate was running for president, and the southern states didn’t like him. They swore that if the new candidate were to get elected, they would secede from the union. It was against ourselves. On July 1st of 1863, a battle broke out over Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This battle lasted 3 days in total and was one of the most brutal battles during the war. Costing more lives than in any other battle, for both sides of the war. During the battle, General Robert E. Lee, of the confederacy, ordered a charge across the battlefield in order to take control of the Union's hilltop position. Led by three Generals, including Major General George Pickett, this charge cost 50% of the soldiers in the Confederate army ultimately failing and becoming one of the worst mistakes during the war. The Confederates retreated and the Union won. This battle is was a very crucial point over winning the war for the Union, and a very tragic loss for the Confederacy.
