The Battle of Gettysburg occurred on July 1, 1863 during the Civil War. The Union and the Confederates fought on a huge field with two hills. They both wanted to take over the hills because taking the high ground was very important. Taking over the hills were important because it gave a height advantage over the other side. The name of the hills were Little Round Top and Big Round Top.
General Lee decided to not take over the hill, so the Union decided to take it over. After the Union took over the hills they set up a plan for attack. He was told to advance to Big Round Top to defend that hill as well. He advanced up the hill and sat up there and watch everything happen. The Union had cannons on the top of the hill, this is why Cornel Chamblin was asked to go up there. He and his men were to man the cannons in case of another attack on the hills. The Union fought off the Confederates and ended up winning the battle.
The Battle of Gettysburg was a three day long war. That was well fought out between the Union and the Confederates. Thousands of men died and many injured.
