Why The Drinking Age Should Be Lowered To 18
The legal age that a person can buy and consume alcohol should be lowered to 18. There are many factors leading to this thought. At the age of 18 one is considered an adult and for that reason they should have the right to consume alcohol. Even though the legal drinking age is 21 many under that age consume alcohol on the daily. Studies show that 17.5 percent of the spending on alcohol came from people under the age of 21. At the age of 18 people can buy and consume tobacco. They can also get a tattoo or join the military. In my opinion if someone fights in a war then they should be able to have a beer or any type of alcohol that they want. The high drinking age drives teens to drink more alcohol. The law pushes underage drinking to be hidden and that causes more problems than just letting us drink. Lowering the drinking age will help underage drinking be in a more controlled and safe environment. I believe at the age of 18 young adults should be able to make their own choices regarding alcohol. …show more content…
If the law was changed to 18 and allowed young adults to go into a public restaurant or bar setting it would help alcohol related incidents because they wouldn't be restricted to house parties. There are fewer drunk driving accidents and fatalities in many countries with the legal drinking age set at 18. Drinking alcohol is an enjoyable activity and 18 year olds should not be denied that right when they are allowed to do other pleasurable activities at the age of 18. Lowering the legal drinking age to 18 would help the economy because more people would be able to spend money on alcohol in bars or liquor stores and greater tax revenue would be taken by the

If one is eighteen and drinking, they are more likely to be supervised on their alcohol consumption. Dwight B. Heath, a Brown University anthropology professor, claims that “the younger people start to drink the safer they are” (cnn.com). “Alcohol has no mystique. It's no big deal. By contrast, where it's banned until age 21, there's something of the 'forbidden fruit' syndrome,” he continues (cnn.com).
