I bought a drum set and watched YouTube videos to teach myself how to play. I joined the concert band in fifth grade and continued to take it as a class until sophomore year in high school. I also played in the jazz band for four years, the pep band for five years, and the show choir for two. The feeling I got in my stomach when I was up to bat in a baseball game was the same butterflies that I got when I played music with a group. The difference between baseball and playing the drums was that my hard work did not go unnoticed. Music is a universal language that brings people together, and nobody sits on the bench. Music was a healthy alternative for me because it taught me that everyone should be accepted and…

The constant reference of women as “bitches” and “hoes” can be interpreted as offensive or derogatory to women. However, showing women in a negative light appears in many music genres. The fact that it regularly occurs in hip hop is a scapegoat conservatives use to discredit hip hop music. Studies show that other music genres, such as rock music, contain more negative images of women, according to some studies. This is nothing new, just as marketing and advertising companies have used sex to increase market share and earnings, because to be blunt, sex sells.…

I started first on the bass drum, with me being on of the smallest members, I looked pretty comical. Although, I didn’t care, I was only gracious to be a part of such an amazing and talented group of individuals. Choir and singing then became a big aspect of my life and educational career as well; meeting new friends and peers along the way was one of my most cherished memories. I first started singing in middle school, and then continued into my high school years as well. I can honestly say that by joining band and choir, it has connected me with life long friends and has given me many forever cherished memories. They have both pushed me in ways that I couldn’t have pushed myself, taught me many valuable life lessons, gave me the gifts of perseverance and concentration, and have shaped me into the able woman I am today. Over the years I’ve taught others to love music just as much as I do by working with middle and elementary school children. I have also taught at the preschool program located in my high school, desiring to teach them how to push past the obstacles they can not prevent and redirecting their feelings into positivity and valuable…
