The history since the 1300s has witnessed numerous remarkable changes in which the Renaissance plays an integral part. During this period, a person that nearly everyone has heard of, who was considered to be of extreme importance, whose art, observations and inventions had greatly affected the history and even our life nowadays, was Leonardo da Vinci. Despite living in one of the most turbulent times, Leonardo had undeniable outstanding qualities and admirable achievements which made him a distinguished individual, even regarded as “Renaissance man” by many historians and scholars. In this essay, I will be discussing further the historical background and the reasons why Leonardo da Vinci, in my view, is the most significant figure.

While political stability and economic security may be expected to be prerequisites for creation, some of the most radical and far-reaching cultural accomplishments in the Renaissance was done in the periods of greatest insecurity. Since very young age, Leonardo had been struggling to assert himself because he was born as an inlegitimate son of his father, a respected Florentine notary Ser Piero. He also had to look at the political winds and made a lot of crucial dicisions in his life: from the changing of sides to following many other paths than just being a painter. Experiencing early success on becoming a member of the Florence painters’ guild, losing everything within no time at all when the French army conquers Milan, and rising from ashes in joining Cesare Borgia as a military engineer made a wise, restless Leonardo many people look up to
