The Romans did not base slavery on race. Roman slaves came from all over the world. Whenever an area was conquered, the citizens often became slaves. However, slaves also came from captured sailors that were sold by pirates, prisoners of war, and children that families could no longer afford. Young men with a thicker build were the most favored of all slaves being sold because young men would be able to work harder and longer than other slaves. However, if a slave had some form of skill, such as cooking or being educated, often got sold for higher prices as well. Skilled slaves were hard to come by, so slaves that were skilled were treated much better than unskilled ones. These slaves were fed better, weren’t subject to as much abuse, and hardly moved from master to master.
