You will choose one of the following options for your essay: OPTION 1
Explore “irrational” fears – spiders, the dark, boogeymen – and why we have them and how they impact our lives. Use your own story and ask Steven King to enter the conversation (source: “Why We Crave Horror Movies”). OPTION 2
Explore educational fears – lack of ability, not belonging, failure – and why we have them and how they impact our lives. Use your own story and ask any ONE of the following to enter the conversation: Kozol (“Still Separate,
Still Unequal…”), Tatum (“Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together…”).
OPTION 3
Explore cultural fears – related to race, gender, or other “stereotypes” – and why we have them and how they impact our lives. Use your own story and ask any ONE of the following to enter the conversation: Kilbourne (“Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt”), Kimmel (“Gender, Class, and Terrorism”), Banaji and Greenwald (“On Stereotypes”).
Your final paper will be at least four pages, roughly 50% of which will be evidence from the reading(s). Your goal is to show that you have internalized and can communicate the author's main ideas in your own words, so direct quotes should be used sparingly. Rely instead on purposeful summary and paraphrase.
