Why We Lie

"To thine own self be true." (Shakespeare) Unfortunately we are not true to ourselves. We all lie for many reasons which can be for fear of harm, fear of conflict, fear of rejection, fear of punishment, fear of loss or altruistic reasons such as helping our loved ones to make them feel better, which is the only selfless reason why we lie. It all comes down to the one fundamental reason as to why we lie and it is because it mostly works. Just like lying to someone makes them lose their trust for us, lying to ourselves keeps us away from happiness. We are living a life based on lies because we fear the truth. Those lies that we constantly tell ourselves turn into the truth because at that point we are not even sure what is true and what is not. From the moment we first lie to ourselves is when it all starts, the cycle of lies. That moment we tell ourselves when we are going to do something such as "oh I will do that after lunch." Once lunch comes around and we do not complete that task, we feel bad about ourselves and then again tell ourselves the next time we will do it and when that time comes around and we do not complete the task again, we feel the guilt and lack of self-worth and once again lie to ourselves. It keeps going on and on

(Willotoons 2) Not only does lying to our close friends and family lead to consequences but lying to ourselves does as well.
