The Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution was ratified in January 1919 and executed in January 1920. It banned the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors”. This amendment was the finishing touch of decades of realization and fulfillment by organizations such as the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the Anti-Saloon League, and was also built upon the dry laws of eighteen states. The Prohibition Amendment had heavy consequences. It categorized the brewing and distilling of alcohol as illegal. It then went on and expanded state and federal governments, inspired new forms of sociability between men and women, and suppressed elements of immigrant and working-class culture. I stayed for the weekend in June. We camped at a nearby campground that was about 20minutes away from the island by boat. It felt like a dream when you were on the island because it was just so pretty. The most magnificent part is that no cars are allowed on the island so all you see is bikes, and horse and buggies. My favorite part was when my grandparents, Hannah and I biked 8 miles around the entire island. It was probably the easiest bike ride ever because I was so distracted by the stunning view. It would tell you what mile you were on too because a sign to the side of the road would say mile 1, mile 2, mile 3,…
