Introduction
The term “wicked” in the Thesaurus dictionary, one of definitions available, is defined as extremely troublesome and dangerous. In this essay, “wicked” is conjoined with “environmental problems” to have created a new discuss, “wicked environmental problems”. Ballint et al. (2012) opined that wicked problems – in this essay, the focus lies on environment – are characterized by a high degree of scientific uncertainty and a profound lack of agreement on values, combined with the absence of perfect solution.
Connecting scientists to wicked environmental problems, I for sure believe that, is strongly coherent. The reason is mainly because they – i.e. environmental scientists – are expert in this field and for eons having conducted research to investigate the matters. The questions is, what is the best approach to connect the disconnected?
In order to understand the disconnection, referring to proposed approaches by Rice (2013); multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity, are methods to opt. Exercising one out of those three methods, I would pick the last one, transdisciplinary approach. Basing on its definition, transdisciplinarity is a process of integrating academic knowledge from various disciplines with non-academic knowledge. Academic and non-academic stakeholders collaborate and learn from each other.
