January 9, 2015 Who is Shakespeare? “Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them”(goodreads). William Shakespeare is said to be one of the most popular idolized English authors. He has created some of the most relevant plays and poems which are still important today. Many of the things he portrayed in his writings were thought to be from his life experience. Shakespeare has lead the way for modern authors, but he is most famous for his dramatic and romantic tragedy plays. William Shakespeare wasn’t only the definition of great but he also portrayed that trait in his work. William Shakespeare’s early life is pretty much determined from documents. that Shakespeare was baptized in 1564, in England. So it is believed he was born near April 23, 1564. He was the third child of John Shakespeare who was a leather merchant and Mary Arden, he had two sisters and three brothers. Researchers and Scholars determined he attended the King 's New School, a free school chartered in 1553, about a quartermile from his home. He was taught reading, writing, and etc. Grammar schools varied in quality during the Elizabethan era, but grammar school curricula were similar, the basic Latin text was regulated by royal decree, and the school would have provided a complete education in grammar based upon Latin classical authors. On November 28, 1582 it is said Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway at age 18, she was 26. They had 3 kids a daughter and a set of twins. It is said that after the birth of their twins there are no records for 7 years of Shakespeare 's life, which they call the "lost years". Although there are suspicions on what happened during that period, there are many possibilities. It is not known exactly when Shakespeare began writing, but contemporary allusions and records of performances show that several of his plays were on the London stage by 1592.There is evidence that shows in 1592 William Shakespeare earned a living as an actor and playwright

in London and produced several plays. In the 1590 's documents says Shakespeare was a managing partner of an acting company in London, and it was said to be very popular. Records show he had works published and sold as popular literature, although theater culture wasn 't admired by people of class. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. From 1594, Shakespeare 's plays were performed by only the Lord Chamberlain 's Men, a company owned by a group of players, including Shakespeare, that soon became the leading playing company in London. After the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1603, the company was awarded a royal patent by the new king, James I, and changed its name to the King 's Men.William dedicated his first and second published poems Venus and Adonis and

to Henry Wriothesley, the Earl of Southampton whom he caught the eye of. 15 of 37 of William Shakespeare 's plays were published by 1597. Records show after that he bought the second biggest house for his family, but spent all his time in the city writing and acting and went home once a year when theaters were closed. They also show that William and his partners built their own theater in 1599. He also bought lots of land which made him an entrepreneur and more money. All the investments he made gave him the time to write his plays without being interrupted. Few records of Shakespeare 's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others. By 1598, William had become a selling point and began to appear on the title pages. Shakespeare 's first plays were mostly histories except for Romeo and Juliet , the famous romantic tragedy of sexually charged adolescence, love, and death . A play that shows true love never dies. It is one of Shakespeare 's most popular plays along with Hamlet, which is a tragedy set in the Kingdom of Denmark that dramatises the revenge Prince Hamlet is mandated to enact on his uncle who had murdered his own brother, whom was Hamlet 's father, to seize the throne and marry his Hamlet 's mother. In this play it explores betrayal and moral failure, which drives the twist of the plot, destroying the hero and the ones he love. I believe his plays are still read today because they teach life lessons and are related to our lives in a way. William Shakespeare work was more complex and resembled real people.

"He is the greatest dramatist, the greatest poet and the greatest prose writer in the history of the language...
He had a presence like Lincoln or Washington in American history."(utsa.edu). Shakespeare specific language was one of a kind and complex. His themes tells us a little about what he was interested in. Honor, love, and bravery still play a part in today 's society. Shakespeare has a way of affecting people although they don 't know much about him. We experience betrayal, tragedy, love etc. everyday of our lives, which means Shakespeare has a hold of modern day literature. I believe you can learn about him through his work. He wants the audience to have a connection with him because he knew his plays would relate to us in some way. William Shakespeare 's use of Grammar and writing style is believed to set him apart. His grammar and the way he used words represents his genius as a writer. His plays were written in the proper style of his times, although his metaphors and rhetorical phrases didn 't always coordinate with the characters or story plot. Shakespeare 's first plays were written in the conventional style of the day. He wrote them in a stylised language that does not always spring naturally from the needs of the characters or the drama. Shakespeare was very original, complying with traditional style to his own purposes and creating a free flow of words. He often used a pattern expressed by lyrical lines that didn 't rhyme or a blank verse, to compose his plays. Shakespeare is admired for using lots of words that were introduced in language, than other writers of his time. Shakespeare died on 23 April 1616, at the age of 52. He died within a month of signing his will, a document which he begins by describing himself as being in “perfect health”. There is no extant contemporary source that explains how or why he died. He was survived by his wife and two daughters. Susanna had married a physician, John Hall, in 1607, and Judith had
married Thomas Quiney, a vintner, two months before Shakespeare 's death. In his will, Shakespeare left the bulk of his large estate to his elder daughter Susanna. The terms instructed that she pass it down intact to "the first son of her body". The Quineys had three children, all of whom died without marrying. The Halls had one child, Elizabeth, who married twice but died without children in 1670, ending Shakespeare 's direct line. Shakespeare 's will scarcely mentions his wife, Anne, who was probably entitled to one third of his estate automatically. He did make a point,

however, of leaving her "my second best bed", a gift that has led to much speculation. In his will, Shakespeare left the bulk of his large estate to his elder daughter Susanna. Shakespeare was buried in the chancel of the Holy Trinity Church two days after his death. Shakespeare has been honored in many statues and memorials around the world, including funeral monuments in Southwark Cathedral and Poets ' Corner in Westminster Abbey. Shakespeare combined poetic genius with a practical sense of the theatre. Like all playwrights of the time, he dramatised stories from sources. He reshaped each plot to create several centers of interest and to show as many sides of a narrative to the audience as possible. This strength of design ensures that a Shakespeare play can survive translation, cutting and wide interpretation without loss to its base drama. As Shakespeare 's mastery grew, he gave his characters clearer and more varied motivations and distinctive patterns of speech. He preserved aspects of his earlier style in the later plays. In Shakespeare 's late romances, he deliberately returned to a more artificial style, which emphasized the illusion of theatre. Shakespeare 's work has made a lasting impression on later theatre and literature. In particular, he expanded the dramatic potential of characterization, plot, language, and genre. Shakespeare influenced novelists such as Thomas Hardy, William Faulkner, and Charles Dickens. The American novelist Herman Melville 's monologues owe much to Shakespeare, his Captain Ahab in MobyDick is a classic tragic hero, inspired by King Lear. Scholars have identified 20,000 pieces of music linked to Shakespeare 's works. These include two operas by Giuseppe Verdi, Otello and Falstaff, whose critical standing compares with that of the source plays. Shakespeare has also inspired many painters, including the Romantics and the royalty. Shakespeare was not valued in his lifetime, but he received a large amount of praise.
